President's Message
ICHIGO UMEHARA
What was my message in In Touch last month? I would like to ask everyone to check last months message and see the content? Some of you might have found it a little strange or spotted something wrong, but did not raise it to anyone. Only two hotels raised the issue of some "changes" or "differences" to the corporate office.
The discrepancies were intentionally done to see how many people actually read In Touch or even paid any attention to it. Besides Mauna Lani and KLIA, no other hotel, resort or business unit responded with any queries about the content.
This lack of interest shown to In Touch has now forced me to review the value of this monthly communication vehicle. It has shown me that my message is not valued highly by our team members. If so, then I must consider what may be a better way of delivering my thoughts to all of you.
Thank you.

TOKYU CORPORATION VIEWS
Tokyu News
Competitive Organisation
During the Tokyu Association Assembly this year, we invited Mr. Masaaki Mori who used to be the Manager of one of the baseball teams in Japan called the Seibu Lions. During his 9 years as the manager, he led the team 8 times as Division champion and 6 times Japan series champion. Now he works as the sport commentator of NHK (Japan Broadcasting Association) and Nikkan Sports Newspaper.
One who only prizes him/herself cannot truly work.
During my days as a manager, what I treasured most was "How to develop supporting power". Together with that I asked myself "what do I need to achieve the goal". Being a manager does not mean that I know everything. Coaches are people who will compensate for the knowledge I lack. The selections of the coaches were very important. I told them clearly "I do not need people who are not creative and look at their superior when they work". People who only think about themselves and shake hands with the team owners, normally has no talent. When training the players, you do not need past achievements or fame. They tend to hold on to their past and try to convert the player into their own style. It is very important to find people who really love baseball. Coaches job is to wrestle together with the players become dirty with the players and sweat with the players until they forget time. If you do not have enthusiasm with any job, there will be no success. That is why I hired people who can say, "I think ---------", "Manager, that is wrong". I do not mind even if what they say is wrong. If I hire people who I know that will just obey my orders, I will not be able to hear the real voice. Those people will only tell me good things. The people who will actually suffer will be the players.
If there is a coach who wants to be loved by the players I will just say, "take off your uniform". If you think about the future of the players and the team, sometimes you must tell them off. You might buy anger from the players. That is how it should be. People who prize oneself cannot work.
Communication is also important. I told the coaches that, "You must know the players and speak, act differently with each individual to achieve the same goal". How they respond and think varies from person to person. It depends on their family background and people have different fate that they carry since they were born. That is why I went into astrology. You must understand their biorhythm in order to move people effectively.
I told my players that, "You are the stars. That is why you must polish yourself and shine". I wanted to cultivate the spirit of self-reliance. Together with that I told them, "You do not have to hide your feeling during training and battle. Show your feelings when doing things".
I do not like to read peoples faces during work. If we do that we will not be able to perform our best. The same thing goes with other business. There are staffs that read the bosses face when working and bosses who purposely show their expressions when getting things done. If I may say the boss who shows their expression has the guilt. That is why I wanted to create an environment where our players did not have to worry about those small things and act naturally. What I want to say is, "we must give what they need before asking for a result". It is easy to say, "Do a good job" but if we don’t give them the environment to do a good job, they will never be able to give you the result you want. The only "Management" I practised was "Situation Management". Instead of people managing people, we must provide situations so that they act on their own initiative. I also gave our player "time on their own". Looking back on themselves and putting their feet on the ground is always important. By doing that the players will grow by themselves.
Importance of "Understanding" and "Trust"
The purpose of battle is to win. In order to achieve the result we must pull out 120% of the player’s abilities. Important thing is to make the player comfortable before sending them out onto the field. I created an atmosphere so that the players can come into my office anytime. Just saying "Come to me if you have any problem" will not make people come to you. My door is always open to everybody. Players come in with all kinds of problems. Even if the problem is a very small or a boring one for you, it is very important for that person. That is why they come to me. The important thing then is to stand in their shoes and listen to what they have to say from one to ten. Then try to give them an opinion as though it was your problem. After that the players will come back with a bigger problem. Some of the problems they bring in were personal things that normally people will not ask others. Feeling of trust will grow every time. If I had told them that I had no time or just listened to one or two words and given them an answer, nobody would come back to me. The sense of trust is lost.
When trying to do things and want the others to "Understand" you, you must understand them first. You must speak to them eye to eye on the same ground. You must throw away the managers title and go into the players’ circle. If you want to change something, the person who wants the "change" must change or nothing will happen. By opening each other’s heart and understanding each other, during the battle you will not have to speak for the players to move and there will be a strong bond. It is very difficult to move people. The conclusion is, "Understand peoples heart and move the people with your heart". Real strength will not be born from just giving orders.
It is also important for the players to respect each other. If the star players and the supporting players respect each other’s role the team will become stronger. I told my players, "Play your role, do not do things above your ability". We must not ask for anything more. Also it is important to evaluate the substitute players, trainers, scorer, batting pitchers whose role is to support, fairly. If we don’t they will not be satisfied and would not be fair. We should not forget the importance of "supporting power".
There is nothing more sickening than a flatterer moving up the ladder. The teammates will become sick and will lose their enthusiasm. They will know the truth and if that happens and you will never get a strong team.
By implementing these thought I was able to "Win" and winning becomes an ordinary thing. It is very difficult to continue winning after it becomes an ordinary thing. In order for the Tokyu railway to always run on schedule and the team to always win, is a very difficult task.
There is always a reason for winning and losing. For the reason for losing, I can just go back and reflect on my positioning of players, tactics and strategy for the game. That will be enough. But for the players I have told them to analyse why they won. It could be that they won just because the other team made more errors. As a result players were able to understand the opponents better and continued to take advantage.
That is how I built up my team, battled together with the team and as a result continued to win. My biggest finding is how important "Bonding of peoples heart" or "Trust" is. It is my pride that even after I have retired as the manager, the players still come to me with their problems.
