President's Message

ICHIGO UMEHARA

The New Millennium

In history, I believe this is only the second time that a year has three '0' digits in it, 1000 and 2000. This is therefore a unique time to be in and we must make this year 2000 as memorable as possible for our personal lives, our business life and our communities.

We are now one month into the New Year and I ask everyone to review your own resolution for this year. What do you want to achieve this year in every aspect, in personal and business aspects? Tokyu Corporation had set the theme of "Towards a Beautiful Age" and similarly, we should consider whether our own life right now is beautiful or not.

The year 2000 is a time to review and recap. Regardless of whether you are 30 years old or 60 years old, there are countless opportunities out there. Take a look at Dr. Juran who started the Juran Institute when he was 65 years old. He is now 95 years old and is still active in his business and community. You are never too old for new beginnings.

Y2K

Fortunately, there was no significant damage for Pan Pacific Hotels and Resorts and all our properties around the world. However, Y2K showed us that we are living in an international community and our preparation for a smooth transition resulted in a positive result.

Some people mentioned that the whole Y2K was a gimmick created by an IT giant, whatever it was, it ensured that we were prepared for any eventuality and is a good part of risk management. We can be more confident in capitalising on this experience for future situations that may arise.

UNICEF PROJECT IN THAILAND

I am pleased to know that the programme initiated by our hotel in Bangkok has been growing with each year and has received much support from the hotel industry in Bangkok and also the Thai government. This year, another 6 new hotels (including The Regent, Sukhotai, Peninsula, Le Meridien and Royal Orchid Sheraton) will join the current 6 hotels.

This means that a total of 65 girls will have the opportunity to be trained for a year and may then have an opportunity to receive further training in other industries as the committee are in discussions with Rotary International to provide contacts from other industries.

Besides this, the Thai government has also enabled the participating hotels to claim expenses incurred in this training programme back as a tax rebate. I applaud Douglas Louden and other members of the team for their continuous hardwork and commitment to this programme and the fate and future of these young girls. Well done and keep up the good work.

DRIVING MORE RESERVATIONS

Recently, I had a discussion with someone regarding how to drive more reservations and bookings to our hotels. We agreed that it was a three step process which unfortunately we do not fully practise all the time. We complete steps one and two but have not paid enough attention to step three.

Step One: We provide information to our current and potential customers via various means, through advertising, direct mail, on the internet, fax blast etc. This information is fairly generic as it promotes our hotels services, facilities or special promotional packages.

Step Two: We wait for the customer to absorb the information and then follow up via telephone or personal contact to verify if the customer found the information to be useful and should they require more specific information to enable them to make the decision to buy the product.

This step personalises and customises the information as each person has different needs and requirements.

Step Three. A reservation is made and confirmed after the customer has all relevant information and is satisfied. The key is to create a two-way communication between guests and us during the process from step one to three.

The normal way of just sending out a direct mail piece and then sitting back and waiting for the phone to ring for example is not enough. We need to initiate personal contact with our guests to increase reservations.

CONDE NAST AWARD FOR WHISTLER

It was very encouraging to see our lodge in Whistler being recognised as the best ski resort in the whole of North America, as voted by the readers of the Conde Nast Traveler magazine. It confirms that our associates were the ones who made the point of difference. The multi-functional style of work by the team there was certainly mentioned as one of the deciding factors. I urge all other hotels to take note of this and learn from it.

During the last month, several people mentioned and congratulated me on Whistler's achievement. I estimate the free advertising and publicity gained from this award has been enormous.

JANUARY PERFORMANCE

I am pleased to see positive improvements in many hotels in the month of January compared to the same time last year. It is exciting and encouraging news and I must stress to everyone that we must focus on the fundamentals. We must be prepared to roll up our sleeves and get down to business.

It is very important that we try to achieve all budgets within the first quarter and I ask everyone to pitch in and work towards this goal.

PAN PACIFIC HOTELS

Pangkor Island - There is a new sense of excitement at the island as a second airline Berjaya Air will start flights to the island from Kuala Lumpur. There will be four flights per week and this will allow more people to fly to the island and avoid the 3-4 hour land journey by coach. This will be an advantage especially for travellers from Europe and North America who have to endure long flights to get to Malaysia.

Johor Bahru -- I am pleased to see the team spirit in high spirits and with a very positive attitude of doing business in a difficult environment like Johor Bahru. They have also managed to improve their performance as can be seen on the results of the guest satisfaction surveys for 1999.

Glenmarie -- Following the success of the Command Centre in KL, the team at Glenmarie has set up Station 125 which is a venue for department heads, planning committee and outlet managers to meet to review the hotels performance, share information and brainstorm ideas to improve business and increase revenue, guest and associate satisfaction. A new system has also been set up where each planning committee member will lead a team of associates that will be responsible for 29 guest rooms per team. All team members will undergo training in crucial areas like housekeeping and engineering as they will be responsible for their rooms and also be involved to interacting with the guests from those room, to meet and exceed their expectations. This will encourage associates to take more ownership of their jobs and responsibilities.

MOVEMENTS IN PAN PACIFIC

In January, we said goodbye to two corporate team members, Craig Harada and Marylou Garcia who leave Pan Pacific to pursue new challenges. We also said good bye to Susan Gomez, General Manager of The Pan Pacific Hotel Vancouver who retires to join her husband in Mexico. Nejat Sarp, General Manager at The Pan Pacific Hotel Yokohama will also be leaving our company in March. I would like to thank all four for their past contribution and support to Pan Pacific and wish them well in their future endeavours.

Welcome to Deanna McGonigal who joins us as General Manager of The Puteri Pan Pacific Johor Bahru on February 1. Deanna has many years' experience in the hospitality industry. She has been one person whom we tried to bring into Pan Pacific Hotels and Resorts for the last three years. She has a marketing and sales background with also management experience in a food company, which will make her a successful general manager.

Congratulations also to Ken Ide who will be promoted to position of General Manager, The Pan Pacific Hotel Yokohama, with the departure of Nejat. Ken has supported Nejat for the last year and a half, especially the last part of 1999 when he contributed to the upward trend of business by making the Yokohama team into one exciting unit.

Thank you.

TOKYU VIEWS

New Year’s Speech from the President

January 4, 2000

Happy New Year

Below is the summary of this year’s objectives.

The business environment is rapidly changing. Standing still in this kind of environment means being left behind. We must maintain the good working traditions and change systems that are outdated in order for us to be competitive. We must have the commitment to destroy old traditions and systems to create new and effective systems. For our company and our group to survive it is important for us to create a solid management base. That is the reason why we asked all our group companies to create a three years financial plan, starting year 2000. This year we must put the plan into action. A new management structure must be built during this three years and we must execute the plan with strong will.

Looking at our business results as a group and considering the trend of globalisation, "the age of consolidated management" made it important for our company as the core company of the group to govern the others. Last December we established the "Strategy and Investors Relations Committee" to deal with this assignment. The market expects Tokyu Corporation to take leadership and create the vision for the future. We would like the "Strategy and Investors Relations Committee" as the core to build the management strategy and management rules for the group companies. And for those people in the management position, I would like you to not only think about Tokyu Corporation but also engage in your work so as to increase our group company value.

Our business result has not been very good but it is not due to the economic environment surrounding us rather it is because we cannot adapt to the situation by the way we do business. In order for us to do that we must always have our antennas high to collect latest information to identify the needs of our customers and utilise it to provide better products. It is important to listen to our customer's voice and understand the trends. Most of our business deal with customers everyday and information from the fields should be utilised. Words of praise or complaints are messages from our customers that reflect they want us to be. We should share these voices amongst our people and stand in our customers’ shoes to create new business chances.

In recent years, growth of information technology has been very remarkable. Computers are used everywhere in our work and new business using the network has emerged. Because most of our businesses deal with many part of people's daily life, if we can connect these information real time and direct, we can not measure the advantage we have for our business. Although our company uses the Internet for hotel online reservation to strengthen our marketing ability, we should also determine in which other fields we could benefit. I would like not only the Media Development department but also all other departments to study the possibility. In our office we have installed the groupware and a lot of our work has become electronic. We should improve the system further to make our work more efficient.

One of our management policies is to "Manage in harmony with the natural environment". Company is a part of the society that is why we should not only think about our profit and forget about the natural environment. We have established the "Environment Activity Promotion Committee" and positioned it as one of our important business strategy. Until now we have created the Eco-policy, started the Eco up program for all our work areas, Nagatsuta Train Factory acquired the ISO14001 and other activities have been launched. These actions made our people conscious about the natural environment. We will enhance this by our Head Office applying for ISO, creating environment reports, and promoting our activities to the public. This will improve our brand image. We would also like to spread this environment activity through out our group. Individuals should think what he or she could do around them as well.

This year being the wrap up year before the 21st century, everybody should work with confidence and pride and create a strong platform for our future. In order for us to be the winner in the next millennium, we have to live our Management Policy, which is to "Value individuality and make the most of each person" and never spare the effort to raise good talent. Also creating a working environment where everybody becomes energetic is a must.

Our company is one of the largest business asset owners, we also have a very strong brand image, which we have created over the years and employ very talented people. If everybody share their ideas and move forward as one strong team, we will be able to overcome this difficult situation.

Let us make this last year of the 20th century a productive year.
