Corporate Business Plan 2000

We are now working on next years' business targets in the form of the Business Plan 2000. This plan will give all hotels and business units an understanding of the corporate team's priorities for the year 2000. We also expect this to be the tool to help hotels develop your own business plans for next year and subsequently your budgets as well.

The plan for 2000 will naturally be an extension of the 1999 plan in which the theme was Absolute Care. This year, the team developed the core standards for achieving Absolute Care. As a hotel chain, these standards give every hotel the minimum standards for service delivery to ensure that we are able to uphold and maintain the Pan Pacific brand name.

Next year, we expect each business unit to determine your own targets as to what sort of business unit you want to be. For example, a three-meal or all-day dining restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Because you cater to three different groups of people at different times, should you be three different restaurants in terms of service style, amenities, style of food, etc. How would you implement the core standards that we will provide and offer added-value ideas or standards on top of these core items? In rooms, for example, what would a core standard for an airline crew be, what other added value items would be featured in a Pacific Floor room.

During your business planning process, we would like to ask everyone what type of hotel you want to run. This is the time to think of future directions. As the corporate team, it is our duty to clarify to all of you what Absolute Care is and then extend it to Absolute Sales where we must aggressively make revenue growth programmes a goal. How do we extend Absolute Care to the day to day sales activity?

Cluster People Innovation Conference

We recently held the North American Cluster People Innovation conference in San Francisco and expect to host the Malaysian cluster in August at The Pan Pacific Glenmarie and the Asian cluster in September at The Pan Pacific Hotel Yokohama.

The theme for all the conferences is "Visualise and Capitalise our Human Potential". The key goal was to clarify the Pan Pacific way of doing business and how to integrate hotel and corporate people / education initiatives to further develop our associates. How do we take corporate initiatives like the Round Table of Talent and encourage hotels to recreate this concept into mini Round Table within their own team. I am pleased to see that the Mauna Lani team has started this process of organising mini-RTT sessions within the hotel to drive the ideas to all levels of associates in the hotel. And San Francisco has formed a Care Committee with an Associate program "Hear Your Voice" to take the initiatives further within the hotel.

Other workshop issues included implementation of associate satisfaction surveys and utilisation of the results to further improve achievements for our hotels and for recruitment insights. As we enter into the 21st Century we hope that the public will remember Pan Pacific Hotels and Resorts for - OUR PEOPLE.

The discussions also covered significant topics such as our external and internal brand (Shades Campaign) and how the Absolute Care behaviour ties together. The sharing of community programs ranging from Vancouver’s participation in Canada’s Salvation Army, Empty Stocking Fund for the Under Privileged, Richmond Disability Program, the Twenty-four Relay for the Crippled Children to Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows United Way events was exchange with follow up for anticipated year-end public relations. Further learning of "hands-on" service approach from Whistler was reviewed, the corporate scope-of-work competencies were introduced and dialogue as to how the cluster strategy benefits each team was highlighted.

To Lorna, Susan, Eugenio, Kimberly, Desmond, Yolanda, Lyndall, and Lisa, thank you for your efforts in continuing to innovate, educate and move our global company forward. Please continue to share these best practices with your Asian counterparts.

Half-year Results

In general, the first six months, especially towards June have shown some signs of improvement in the total revenue and GOP percentage. At least we have now drawn closer to the levels that we achieved last year.

During the first part of 1999, we worried about the big dip but are certainly glad to see clear signs of improvement. So far, there is still a certain gap between North America and Asia. North America's results are better, compared to last year whilst in Asia, results show a reduction of about 4% under last year's levels. I hope to see this figure reduce as the trend currently shows that Asia is slowly improving and I expect that the latter part of 1999 will produce much better results.

E-Run in Johor Bahru

Our hotel in Johor Bahru recently concluded its 5th and very successful Environmental Run which saw 5000 participants and many others who had to be turned away due to the set capacity. This event has generated much interest within the l ocal community in the past years and is now featured in the calendar of events for the year in the city.

In Mauna Lani, a similar event is organised within the community. I would like to encourage all hotels to plan and organise at least one big community event every year as our contribution towards the community.

I would like to congratulate the team at Johor Bahru for their achievement but at the same time throw a challenge to them to do better next year and ultimately how to bring this event to a national level participation.

Safety on the roads

Recently, we heard of one of our colleagues in our Kuala Lumpur hotel who was killed whilst riding on his motorbike. His wife who was riding pillion behind him also passed away. In this age where we all depend on all modes of transportation, we must be more careful when using or coming into contact with them. Please take that extra second to stop and look, it could save your life and please do not drink and drive. Life is precious and we must do what we can to make sure we treasure it.

Thank you.

CENTRAL RESERVATIONS UPDATE

(By Yvonne Young)

The Central Reservations Office has been operating for one and half years. Our office is based at Corporate Office and we take reservations for all 20 of our properties. We are an all ladies team consisting of myself Yvonne Young, Ally Sze, Diana Seah and helping us part-time is Belinda See.

During the first year of operation, we took a total of 37,869 calls which resulted in 11,014 reservations and earned a total of S$1,557,080 revenue for the 20 properties. We always try to upsell the rooms of the hotel and by now, all of us have developed a pretty good memory, as we need to remember each hotel’s information and rates.

Out of the one and half year, we have seen an increase in revenue for the following hotels.

PRINCIPLES TO LIVE BY

Failure is never final and success is never-ending.

Success is a journey, not a destination.

---------------

You never get any fun out of things you haven't done.

---------------

There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when it's convenient. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results.

Current Market Trends

Malaysia's New Tourism promotion approach

The Malaysia Government plans to "sell" the whole country as a tourism product instead of the usual "12 destinations" done in previous promotions. The 12 destinations are Langkawi, Pangkor, Taman Negara, Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu, Sarawak, Tasik Bera, Tasik Kenyir and Lembah Danum. These 12 destinations will remain on the list but greater effort would be made to promote Malaysia. Culture, Arts and Tourism Minister Datuk Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir mentioned that more familiarization tours for the foreign press would be organized. (New Straits Times - July 4, 1999)

Malaysia's Next Growth Engine

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamed had recently launched Cyberjaya on July 8, 1999. Cyberjaya is the nerve center of the Multimedia Super Corridor, Malaysia's next engine of growth, which will also contribute significantly to the nation's ongoing economic recovery.

The Prime Minister mentioned that throughout Malaysia's transformation from an agriculture-based economy to one focused on manufacturing, a key factor was the emphasis on becoming globally competitive by creating a conducive business environment. This will continue through the third phase of the development as they can capitalize on the opportunities of the Information Age. Thus the MSC initiative will carry the Malaysian success story of growth and stability well into the next millenium.

Besides that the Prime Minister added that they must continue to innovate and be even more responsive to investors to attract knowledge from around the world to help create the vibrant, creative, networked society here in Cyberjaya. (Business Times - July 9, 1999)

TOKYU CORPORATION VIEWS

Tokyu Related Web Sites

As the Internet population is growing in a rapid pace, Tokyu group companies have launched a lot of interesting web sites for our customers. There are a lot of business opportunities on the Internet and we can not be left behind. During the mid-summer gift season (mid-summer gift = people present gift to relatives and superiors as an appreciation of the services they have received), Tokyu Department Store doubled their sales through the Internet against last year.

Tokyu Corporation Home Page (www.tokyu.co.jp) – Japanese Only

The main Home Page of our company. It provides the latest information about our activities, new products, services, company information and etc. Also there is a page called "Customers Voice" where our customers can send their comments, opinion, suggestions and questions about our company. I think all our group companies should have this kind of "Customers Voice" page. Unfortunately this page is only in Japanese.

Tokyu Group Home Page (www.tokyu-group.co.jp) – Japanese & English

This home page will give you information about our group and links to group companies that have their own home page. The list is in alphabetical order to make it easy for our customers to look up the company they are trying to find. The information is also in English so even if you don’t speak or read Japanese you can enjoy the site. At this moment Pan Pacific Hotels & Resorts is not on the list but we will create a link as soon as possible.

Noren Town (www.tokyu-shop.ne.jp/index.html) – Japanese only

The Noren Town is one of our unique sites which is made up of "Noren Town Mall" and "@QUEST". "Noren Town Mall" is a virtual shopping site where you can enjoy on-line shopping from Tokyu Department Store, Tokyu Tourist, Tokyu Hands, Jim Thompson and etc. If you are looking for a specific item you can go to our concierge who will assist you in finding the items. The mall is divided in to smaller shopping malls like "Fashion", "Interior", "Home Electronics", "Household items", "Food & Drinks", Game & Hobby", "PC and related items", "Travel Services" and "Services & others". There is also an outlet where you can find quality goods at an affordable price.

"@QUEST" is like a web magazine where you can find latest information about our Culture Schools, Shopping, World News (New York and London), Travel Information, Astrology, Tea Room (Useful information), etc. The information is updated on the 1st and 16th of every month. The main concept of this magazine is to provide information to lead a better life. Every issue has a different theme. The theme of Volume 18 (July 16th to 31st) was "Challenge".

Resort & Leisure Guide (www.tokyu-group.co.jp/resort-leisure/) – Japanese only

This home page gives you valuable information about our group hotels and transportation systems. From travel info like accommodation and transportation to Tokyu Group Members Club, this site gives you useful information to make your business or leisure trip affordable.

Pan Pacific Hotels & Resorts (www.panpac.com) – English only (Japanese coming soon)

As most of you know Pan Pacific Hotels & Resorts has a home page. It is quite advanced since it can make on-line reservation where as most of the other Japanese Hotel Chains still use e-mail when they take in a reservation via the Internet. We have almost completed the Japanese version of the PPHR home page and should be ready by the end of this month. We will then work on the reservation screen so that our guests can make their reservation in Japanese.

There are a lot of interesting sites on the web. Our challenge now would be to make people access our sites. It is no use even if it’s the best site on the web if nobody sees it.
