Nicholas II: Russia's Last Emperor

To this day, both Russians and Westerners have differing opinions on the last Russian tsar, Nicholas II, who was executed by the Bolsheviks in 1918. Some call him a model statesman and even a martyr - while others dismiss him as a faceless politician who ruined his country. He's referred to as both Nicholas the Slaughterer and the Tsar-Martyr. So what was the real story behind the last emperor?

Sadly, many books and documentaries about Nicholas II made over the last few decades always seem to cast him in the same negative light. Western researchers and biographers always seem to rely on the same lies and propaganda circulated by the Bolsheviks and enemies of the monarchy at the beginning of the 20th century, during and after the Revolution, and through the Soviet years. Why? I don't know, perhaps it is a reflection of the society in which we live today, one that is hungry for scandal and gossip, rather than honesty and the truth.

The following 21-minute documentary was produced by Russia Today, and offers an interesting mix of historical film footage, motion picture clips and interviews with Russian historians and members of the Russian Orthodox Church. Contrary to the numerous documetaries produced in the United States and Great Britian over the years which portray Nicholas II in a negative light, this Russian-produced documentary offers a more balanced and honest analysis of the last tsar.
