Gilbert's Books and Royal Russia are pleased to announce a new and expanded edition of Six Years at the Russian Court by Margaretta Eagar, to be published in March 2011.

Originally published in 1906, they offer the personal memoirs of an Irish-born nanny who shares intimate anecdotes of the day-to-day lives of the four daughters of Emperor Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna.”

Born in Ireland, Miss Eagar had been selected as the new nanny, to take charge of the Grand Duchesses Olga, Tatiana, Marie and Anastasia. She took up her new position in 1898, and for the next six years, she would prove not only a dutiful nanny, but also as a devoted nurse, and friend to the August children.

She notes in her book: “Shortly after the birth of the Czarevich, I said to the Empress that I often thought of writing my memoirs. She encouraged me to do so, saying so many untruths had been published that it would be a relief to have an account of the Russian Court which was absolutely true.”

The book portrays the Emperor and Empress as patient and loving parents, sharing private moments that Eagar observed as they spent time with their children. Her memoirs offer numerous anecdotes of the Imperial family’s daily routine, personal tastes, personalities, and a number of incidents in their lives, including two attempts to assassinate Nicholas II. Eagar also offers her personal impressions of Russia.

This new expanded edition will feature two additional chapters about the grand duchesses, written by Miss Eagar in 1909, five years after she left Russia. Also, an extensive 46-page introduction, written by *Charlotte Zeepvat will be included that includes previously unpublished material on Miss Eagar's personal life before and after Russia, her thoughts on the grand duchesses, letters by or about her from the State Archives of the Russian Federation, the reason why she left Russia in 1904, as well as some of her own writing that does not appear in her book.
