Her Majesty Margrethe II, Queen of Denmark and Prince Consort Henrik of Denmark toured Tsarskoye Selo during their Royal State Visit to Russia of September 6-12, 2011.

The Queen admired the splendours of the Catherine Palace and the homy feeling of the Alexander Palace, where Princess Dagmar of Denmark, in 1868 gave birth to Russia’s last tsar Nicholas II. In memory of the princess, who was known to Russians as Empress Consort Maria Fiodorovna, spouse of Emperor Alexander III, the Queen took a memorial tour through the staterooms and living quarters of the former royal residence. She was delighted seeing the palaces’ restored historical interiors she had heard so much of before, as well as the raiser equipped tables in motion at the baroque-styled Hermitage Pavilion in the Catherine Park which the Queen commented as “fantastisc!”

Queen Margrethe II was the first European monarch to officially visit the Soviet Union in 1975. A photograph of that year from our museum archives, showing the Queen and the Prince Consort on their tour of the Catherine Palace at the beginning of its restoration, became a nice surprise gift for the royal couple from Denmark.

The State Visit to Russia included a visit to Moscow from 6th-8th September and to Saint Petersburg from 8th-9th September. The State Visit was followed by a private visit until 12th September, 2011. The Danish royal couple departed St. Petersburg on the Danish royal yacht Danneborg.
