Rare Collection of Photos of the Russian
Imperial Family to be Auctioned in Moscow

A small album containing 62 photographs of the Russian Imperial family is expected to sell for more than 300,000 Roubles

A collection of photographs of members of the Russian Imperial family, were put up for auction on February 12 by the Empire Auction House in Moscow. The photographs sold for 220,000 Roubles. The estimate was set for 300,000 Roubles ($10,000 USD).

The small photo album contains 62 photographs of members of the Russian Imperial family taken in the late 1890s to early 20th century. Also included are photographs of two of the Imperial yachts: Tsarevna and The Polar Star, and members of their crews.

The photographs are believed to have been taken by a member of the Empress Alexandra Feodorovna’s suite. The Empress was, herself a keen photographer, and owned a Kodak camera, a gift from her grandmother, Queen Victoria of Great Britain. She is depicted in several images with camera in hand.

The 62 photographs show the Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, Grand Duke Peter Nikolaevich, Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna, Prince Peter Alexandrovich of Oldenburg, Waldemar, Prince Waldemar of Denmark (the younger brother of Empress Maria Feodorovna), Prince Albert (the future King Albert I of Belgium), Count Fredericks, and other ministers and members of the Russian Court.

The auction took place on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 12:00 in the Marriott Moscow Royal Aurora Hotel. The auction also included decorations, medals and coins of Imperial Russia.
