Century anniversary of the Moscow Sts Martha and Mary Convent of Mercy will be celebrated on September 7.

It was decided at its Trustees session held on Thursday in Moscow. Participating were Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov and head of St. Andrew the First-Called Foundation Vladimir Yakunin.

Celebrations were supposed to be conducted on September 8, but as the Feast of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God is celebrated on the day, it was decided to celebrate the Convent anniversary the day before. The Patriarch noted, it was a chance to prolong celebrations of the jubilee on this church feast.

According to Natalia Yakunina, a member of the board of St. Andrew the First-Called Foundation, who actively participated in restoration of the Convent, British delegation headed by Prince Charles is expected to visit the celebrations.

Sts Martha and Mary Convent of Mercy was founded by Great Duchess Elisabeth (Yelizaveta Fyodorovna Romanova) in February 1909. She refused to leave Russia during revolutionary days and was arrested in spring of 1918 and martyred in a duffer not far from Alapayevsk. The convent existed until 1926. Restoration works started eighty years after.
