DESCRIPTION
This volume offers a unique mix of biographical materials (diaries and letters) about Grand Duke Sergei Aleksandrovich Romanov (1857-1905), a son of Aleksander II and a brother of Aleksander III. He married Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna (nee Princess Elizabeth of Hesse) in 1884. He was assassinated in 1905, like his father by terrorists.
This is the fourth volume of documentary materials for the biography of Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich (1857-1905). It covers the 10-year period of his life from 1884 to 1894. It begins with a joyous event - the marriage of the grand duke June 3, 1884 to the 19-year-old Princess Elizabeth of Hesse, and ends with one of the saddest events in his life - the death of his elder brother, Emperor Alexander III on October 20. It was Alexander III who appointed Sergei as governor general of Moscow in 1891.
Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich is one of the most misunderstood and maligned of the Russian grand dukes. He had numerous responsibilities and achievements: founder and chairman of the Royal Palestine Society, the chairman of the several committees for arrangement of arts and sciences museums, societies, academies, etc. He and his wife were favourites of Emperor Alexander III.
This volume of memoirs include diaries and letters of the grand duke, as well as archival documents covering the years 1884-1894. Many of the materials in this volume are published for the first time from the archives in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Illustrated with many rare photographs of the grand duke and his family. Includes name index. Quality design.
