The Russian lady who wrote and illustrated this unique memoir of life before the Revolution was born in 1871. It was after she emigrated from Russia in 1919 and while she lived for some years with a sister and her French husband in Concarneau, Brittany, that she set down her detailed recollections and executed the accompanying watercolours. She did this mainly to enlighten one of her granddaughters about her family's life in the last decades of Tsarist Russia. The result is a first-hand account of a way of living which we have heretofore known almost exclusively through the works of Chekhov, Turgenev, and a few other observant writers of the second half of the 19th century. Here are the country estates, the large families indulging in various sports and pastimes, the observances of Easter and Christmas, the heat of the summer, the frost of the winter. And through it all runs the theme of nostalgia for better, more innocent times -- a sense of paradise lost. Mariamna Davydoff had studied painting at the Academie Julian and the Grande Chaumiere in Paris, and had made something of a reputation in Russia as a caricaturist, but when she fled from Russia she had to leave most of her possessions behind, including all the watercolours and caricatures she had done before the Revolution. These were all destroyed by the Bolsheviks; but the portfolios of her reminiscences, of which this book presents a selection, are fortunately intact and will introduce her enchanting and revealing work to a new public.
