This book is dedicated to one of the most exclusive and magnificent yachts ever built: the Russian Imperial Yacht Standart. At her time (late nineteenth - early twentieth century) she was the most elegant ship in existence and was the dream of every crowned head of Europe or millionaire. Built to serve the Russian Emperor and his family, she became the classic example of how yachts at that time were to be designed. More or less the design of future yachts was based on the magnificent lines and technology used on the Imperial Yacht Standart.
The Imperial Yacht Standart herself was designed based on experiences gained from a long and impressive line of earlier Russian Imperial Yachts and her technology was extremely impressive even by today's standards. Although time has almost wiped out all traces of her existence and a period of neglectance and lack of true historic interest in all matters pertaining to the lives of the last Romanovs has had a destructive effect, the Imperial Yacht Standart is not forgotten.
The book of memoirs of captain second rank Nikolay Sablin tells about his service on the yacht of Emperor Nicholas II and covers events from 1906 to 1914. His memoirs represent the unique certificate of the person connected directly to the Russian Imperial Family.
The book acquaints the reader with the description of formal receptions and solemn ceremonies, and also meetings of the Russian emperor with heads of the European states. These memoirs are rich with details of a life, a way of life of an imperial family, entertainments, employment, interests.
The book is richly illustrated. The photographs are from the Russian State Archive of the Navy (RGAVMF), many of them are published for the first time: photos of members of the imperial family, the officers serving on the yacht. Some shots convey the informal conditions and family atmosphere that were enjoyed on the Imperial yacht.
This edition is supplemented with helpful material: an index of personal names, the ships and the place names mentioned in the text, and also a short dictionary of special sea terms.
