A unique and intimate biography that offers intimate anecdotes of the day-to-day lives of the Czar’s children.”

Born in Ireland, Miss Eagar had been selected to take charge of the Grand Duchesses Olga, Tatiana, Marie and Anastasia. Arriving in 1898, she was to act as governess, nurse, and friend to the four daughters of Nicholas II.

She notes in her book: “Shortly after the birth of the Czarevich, I said to the Empress that I often thought of writing my memoirs. She encouraged me to do so, saying so many untruths had been published that it would be a relief to have an account of the Russian Court which was absolutely true.”

The book portrays the Emperor and Empress as patient and loving parents, sharing private moments that Eagar observed as they spent time with their five children. Her memoirs offer numerous anecdotes of the Imperial family’s daily routine, personal tastes, personalities, and a number of incidents in their lives, including two attempts to assassinate Nicholas II.
