A monument to Baron Alexander von Stieglitz has been unveiled at the Stieglitz Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg.
Steiglitz (1814-1884) was a Russian philanthropist and financier. He was the first Governor of the State Bank of the Russian Empire.
In 1878 he donated funds to build a museum for the benefit of students of the Central School of Engineering Design, which had been established by him earlier. The museum was to house Stieglitz's private collection of 30,000 items, including rare glassware, porcelains, tapestries, furniture and tiled stoves. After the Revolution, many items were moved to the Hemitage Museum.
