Restoration of Kronstadt’s St Nicholas Nears Completion

Svetlana Medvedeva has attended a ceremony to sanctify new bells of the historic Church of St Nicholas in the Russian naval port of Kronstadt close to St Petersburg.

The church is close to complete restoration ahead of its 100th opening anniversary in 2013. Before the 1917 Bolshevik revolution, it was the main worship place of the Imperial Navy.

Symbolically, one of Svetlana’s granddads was a naval officer.

Architecturally, the Church of St Nicholas resembles Constantinople’s St Sophia. It is almost as big as Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour.

Bells Return to Kronstadt

A 21-ton cargo of bells has been stopping traffic in Kronstadt as it completes its journey to the Naval Cathedral.

The church, ordered by Tsar Nikolai II, lost most of its bells soon after the revolution – but 15 new ones have been forged in Voronezh and delivered to the island town near St. Petersburg.

They are due to be solemnly hung from the belltower on July 31, joining the solitary survivor from pre-Communist times, Moskovsky Komsomolets reported.
