AL East Beat
Top 10 prospects of the AL East: (These players must not be at the major league level, and be 25 years old or less) #1 (3B) R Branyon (Cleveland) Chicks dig the Longball. Power, unadulterated power. Only 22, Braynon should be hitting 30 home runs a season by 2002. Has some holes in his swing, but should be a great player. #2 (CF) C Patterson (Toronto) 5 Tool player. Can hit, hit for power, Run, Field, and Throw. A couple of seasons away, reminds many scouts of Griffey JR. Enough said. #3 (P) D Schaefer (Homestead) Schaefer, drafted #5 overall in the 2000 draft, is a 20 year old pitcher with outstanding Arm Strength and 3 legitimate pitches. Schaefer projects as a solid #2 pitcher in the majors, and should contribute at the major league level by the 2002 season. Just signed with Homestead after a protracted hold out because he wanted more money than #4 pick Tuffy Heiser. #4 (LF) E Zavaras (Atlantic) Possibly the best positional player to come out of the 2000 draft, Zavaras is a 19 year "tools" player who can hit for average, hit with power, and run. Zavaras is a few seasons from reaching the Major League level, but should be a keeper. A lesser version of C Patterson because of his fielding weakness. #5 (SS) W Oliva (Cleveland) Oliva may be the closest of the top 5 to making a contribution at the major league level. At 25 years old he probably will be able to play in the 2001 season. Oliva is not flashy, but has good pop for his position and makes good contact. The dearth of prospects at the middle infield positions probably raises his value. #6 M Clement (Cleveland) Clement is he 3rd Cleveland player to be mentioned in the top 6. Already having good arm strength and control, Clement is almost ready to make an impact. Clement did have a brief appearance during the 1999 season, pitching 1 scoreless inning. #7 (RF) R Riddle (A.C) Riddle does not have the raw tools of a Patterson or Zavaras, but is a hard worker who has succeeded at every level. "All the guy does is hit" says one scout, "he will never be a star, but will be a solid contributor at the major league level" #8 (LF) F Seguignol (Atlantic) Seguignol has the potential to be a very good Power hitter, and can also play first base. He must refine his batting stroke a little before getting to the major league level. # 9 (P) T Drew (Homestead) Drew projects as a middle of the rotation starter, possessing good arm strength and decent control. At only 20 years old, Drew needs a few years of seasoning to improve some of his pitches. # 10 (P) B Coles (Homestead) Another young pitcher from the Homestead system, Coles has tremendous arm strength. Cloles, 22, must continue to work on his control, as he walked a record 142 batters last season in the FSL. (The rankings are based purely on opinion)
