St. John River on January 15, 1838, when an opening was made in the ice to allow
the ordination to take palce. He joined the Bear island Baptist Church. John and
Ann joined the Mormon faith in New Brunswick and, together with Ann's parents and
her four brothers left New Brunswick for Nauvoo, Illinois which was the headquarters
of the Mormon Church. The fall of 1844 was a troubled time for the Mormon Church
and it disbanded soon after their arrival in Nauvoo, Ill. Stephen Cameron
left for Sydenham Twp, followed shortly thereafter by Peter Cameron and
John and Ann Day. They arrived in Sydenham in 1846 from Chicago. John obtained a

They had a family of seven, most of whom were born in Ontario. Daywood Baptist Church
was formed in 1869 and John was made a deacon. The Days and Camerons were very
religious families and they were instrumental in the founding and building of the
Daywood Baptist Church. The Church was sold and moved away in 1940. In 1848, John Day
set aside a plot of land, part of Lot 27, Conc. B, as a family burial ground and it is

Marquapit Lake is part of the series of lakes (of which Grand Lake is one)
going toward the Salmon River and Chipman. George Day built a house beside
the Baptist Church at Daywood, and on a Sunday morning, the church was
pretty well
filled with Days. The family went to Brian Hill School at which John Nathaniel Lannin
later taught. In May 1863, a post Office was established known as Daywood
Post Office. it was located at Lot 25, Conc. C., Sydenham. Abraham S. Cameron
was the postmaster until April 1, 1882 when the office closed. Thomas Robert Day
mentions in one of his letters that "My father George Day settled on the
north side of Grandfather. Father got injured while at carpentering and
sold out to Uncle Tom and we moved to the village of Leith on the shore of
Owen Sound Bay where he and mother died and were buried in Daywood Cemetery."
George Day was a carpenter and while shingling a barn, fell from the roof and a
nail pierced his back which caused his death a few years later.(Written by
Georgina Lannin, daughter of Mary Ann Day and John Nathaniel Lannin.).
Leith is a small village on Georgian Bay, about 3-4 miles from the old village
of Daywood.1 26

Occ: Worked on the J. Aitken farm for 63 years.
Educ: Finished Public School. Never married.
From DB Day: Thomas Robert Day was a bit of a character in the Annan area.
He was commonly known as "Aitken Tom" He never did marry and worked for
ms. margaret Aitken on her farm just south of my Grandad's. He was a farmhand
and lived at Aitken's farm for 61 years. He started farming right out of
public School and, although he never owned his own farm, he worked as
diligently as if it were his own. He had record producing Jersey cows and kept
one of the finest fruit orchards in this part of the country. He was also a
bit of an entertainer and loved to sing and recite at neighborhood
concerts. A newspaper article I have says he was "...a clean liver.
He lived a clean life, never used tobacco in any form and never touched
liquor of any kind. He never forgot the art of handling the needles...
When he was a boy he used to knit his own socks and his own mittens.
He is supplied with yarn by the Annan Red Cross branch and all his socks
are sent to that branch as he finishes them. The ladies have no hesitation
in stating that his knitting compares most favourably with that sent in by
the ladies themselves." Finally, the article mentions Tom's siblings:
"Andrew, the youngest of the brothers, went to the United States and makes
his home now at Lorain, Ohio. He has been a frequent visitor to Owen Sound
during recent years." He apparently was a pretty good baseball and cricket
player. He attended the Baptist Church until it closed at Leith, then he
attended the United Church in Annan. Appears in the 1871/81/91/1901
Sydenham, Ontario Census, age 39, Laborer. Death date from Sydenham Records (Dorothy Bell).

Named after his father's (George Peter Day) sister's (Margaret) husband, Andrew Barton.
According the the Baptist record from McMaster Univ., Hamilton, Ont., Andrew was
baptized at Daywood Baptist Church, Sydenham, Ontario on 11-20-1885. On the 1891
Ontario Census, Sydenham, Andrew is 23, living with Hannah Day, 65, widow,

is listed as 1868. On his death certificate it's 1867. On Andrew's
Naturalization papers, his birthday is listed as 1868. On Thomas'
birth certificate, Andrew's occupation is listed as "cement burner" and
they lived on Standish Avenue in Owen Sound. Tim's version: Andrew came to
the US circa 1910-1911---supposedly jumped ship at the Sault Ste. Marie Locks.
Charlotte came by train from Buffalo with Thomas Elgin on her lap (Family Lore
as told to Tim by his Dad.) Autumn's version: Andrew went up to Canada to get
Charlotte and the kids (or else met them in Buffalo). Thomas said that he
remembered riding on his father's lap from Buffalo to Lorain. They are listed
in the city directory of 1911. (Family Lore as told to Autumn by her Dad.)
According to his Petition, for Naturaliztion papers dated 1918, Andrew emigrated

working as a Custodian at the Whittier School, living at 330 Idaho. Andrrew
joined the Delware Avenue United Methodist Church , Lorain, Ohio, on 5-23-1920.
Our government almost deported Andrew and Charlotte during World War II when Thomas Elgin
couldn't find his naturalization papers and they made a background check
of the family. By that time, Andrew was in his mid 70's and incapacitated
by a stroke and Charlotte had diabetes and was not so well either.
Thomas Elgin said the Immigration people were terrible to her and that
they ruined what little health she had left. Andrew was a member of the
Masonic Lodge and wore a Mason ring; and, was also a member of the Delaware
Methodist Church in Lorain, Ohio and has his name on a pew in that church.
Andrew had frequently visited his brother, Thomas R. Day, in Owen Sound, Ont.
In the 1920 Census, Lorain County, Andrew occuptaion was Watchman at the
Shipyards. Also listed on the 1920 Lorain County Census was Roger Feagles,
waif, age 3 1/2, b. Ohio. Interesting note: In the 1919/1920 Lorain, Ohio
Directory, Andrew, David H. Day, Wilbert, Merle Deeter, Harold D. Preble

Ship Building Company. David H. Day and Andrew were 2nd cousins; Wilbert
