FLEX TIME AND ALTERNATE WORK SCHEDULES (AFSCME Local 972 Newsletter - June 1995) On April 25, 1995 Local 972 President Pat Coyne and Auditor General Barbara Hafer finalized negotiations to establish alternate work schedules and flex time within the Department of the Auditor General. A pilot program began May 1st in the Bureau of Federal Audits, Corporation Tax Audits and Support Services. The program is expected to be implemented throughout the Department by September 1st. The program will give employees more flexibility in establishing their working hours to make it easier to meet the demands of child care, care pooling, etc. "It took several months of tedious negotiations but it was well worth it. This is a great benefit which I feel will enhance the quality of life of Local 972 members. After the program is fully implemented in AG we intend to sit down with the administration in Treasury and begin negotiations to establish a similar program for our brothers and sisters in the Treasury Department," stated President Coyne. ALTERNATE WORK SCHEDULE IMPLEMENTED (AFSCME Local 972 Newsletter - January 1996) After a six month test period, alternate work schedules have been implemented throughout the Auditor General's Department. Any individual who participates will work fifteen- 8 hour days and four- 7.5 hour days and receive one 'AWS' day off during each four week period. "So far the program has been working well and has been enthusiastically received by AG employees. There are a few minor problems which are being worked out on a day to day basis. I would like to commend Chief Steward Bill Garrity and Council 90 Staff Representative Dave Gash for their work in getting the program established," stated President Pat Coyne. "I was informed by AFSCME Council 90 officials that this is the best AWS program of any state agency. Our membership should be aware that this benefit, just like all of our benefits, was not 'given' to us by management. It was obtained by your union through long and difficult negotiations. Many of our members must realize that if it were not for AFSCME we would not have the benefits we enjoy today," concluded Coyne. Local 972 is totally committed to bringing the AWS program to the Treasury Department. President Coyne and Chief Steward Garrity have had productive meetings with Treasury administrators on the program. It is anticipated that details for initiation of the AWS program in Treasury will be finalized in the near future. AWS APPROVED IN TREASURY (AFSCME Local 972 Newsletter - April 1996) After several months of discussion and planning, AFSCME Local 972 and the Treasury Department has entered into an agreement to establish an AWS program. The agreement provides that the program be implemented by April 15, 1996. The program is basically the same as that of the Auditor General's Department. Any individual who participates will work fifteen- 8 hour days and four- 7.5 hour days and receive one 'AWS' day off during each four week period. "The AWS program has been working very well in the Auditor General's Department and I expect the same results in Treasury. This is a great benefit for our Treasury members. I would like to commend Chief Steward Bill Garrity for his work in getting the program established," stated President Pat Coyne. (NOTE: THE AWS PROGRAM HAS BEEN IN USE FOR OVER TWO YEARS. IT IS WELL RECEIVED BY THE EMPLOYEES OF BOTH AUDITOR GENERAL AND TREASURY. AS PREDICTED, IT HAS INCREASED THE MORALE OF BOTH DEPARTMENTS AND HAS HAD NO ADVERSE EFFECT ON PRODUCTIVITY.)
