Australian Phonecards were first introduced in 1989 in
Geelong Victoria and have been around ever since. The first type of phonecard was the
Anritsu Corporation card, produced in Japan.

Anritsu. Anritsu Back.

I have been collecting phonecards for eight years now, and have built up my collection,
of not only Australian cards, but overseas cards too.
The pictures below are of the early types, followed by the new.

$5 Invisible
Heritage $10 invisible
Heritage. $20 Invisible
Heritage.

These phonecards are from the "Invisible Heritage" three card set. The set contains a $5.00, $10.00
and $20.00 card. The set was released in 1994.

$5 Penguin.

The Antarctic set also of three cards, and features a penguin on one of it's cards.
The $5.00 card has a picture of a crabeater seal, and the $20.00 card is of a pair of Orca whales.
This set was released in 1996.

$5 Tropical fish.

The tropical fish series has three different pictures on them. On the fourth card, a $2.00 card,
there is a combination of all three pictures.
This set was released in early 1996.

Many cards in Australia, have had an "overprint" on them.
This card was used on various occasions.

$10 Grand Prix.

There are many phonecards based on themes.
This card is from the Melbourne Formula 1 Grand Prix.
It features Damon Hill driving for the William's Renault team.

Something Small.
This card was part of a competition to design a card depicting what a phonecard was.

Cleaning.

Some of the early cards were not for phonecalls, but for cleaning the machines.

The newest type of phonecard, is the Chip based card, similar to those of Germany,
Ireland and Canada.
With the advent of the new "CHIP"
based technology, Telstra Australia has since upgraded their Payphones to this
system. Below are some examples of these cards.
Chip.

  • Telstra promoted the shootingfish video by offering a free rental with every shootingfish phonecard.
