************************************************** SNYDER'S NEWSLETTER ************************************************** January 29, 1998 # 1 Hello and welcome to your newsletter. My name is Eva Wamsley Loeffelbein and I am a descendant on both sides of my parents with the Snyder surname. Sarah F. Wamsley is my great-great Aunt and she married Jacob Snyder Sr in December 22, 1936 she was the sister to my great-great grandfather Joseph Wamsley Jr that married Eliza Stalnaker. On my mother's side John Edison Beverly married Maud Snyder from VA This is just a little information about me and my family. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------ Jean Loudin sent this message to Deb Blare John Wesley Snyder Children: Mary Ann, William, Alfred, Israel, Eliza, Louise, Edward, Tunstall, Mande rville.. He was in Lewis County in 1850, in 1866 on Charles Fork of Upper Spring Creek in Roan Co. He was born in Pendleton County. When they went to Roane and Doddridge Co area they may have left behind a Susan and John [children] Not sure yet If anyone has any information let us know and we will post it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------- David Anderson: I have Stanley Anderson's Book on the William Silas Anderson Family. He records the genealogy of 8 of WSA;s kids. One has no record past 1850, one married a Cowger. All the rest married into Frederick Snyder's family. Stanley confesses to never having the name of Frederick Snyder's wife. He list 3 other Snyder children. He is willing to do look up's for anyone. Don't be afraid to ask....... his email address: seth@access.mountain.net. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------- This is our first main letter from Charles Lee Snyder: Hello Eva, Thanks for offering to take on the newsletter. I just started my research this past September and thanks to people like Angella Bloom, Jeanette Richie, and Martha Valentine I was able to peice the following together in about three months. I hope it helps someone and maybe someone out there can help fill in the blanks and take these family lines back even further. Thanks again to all of you. Chuck Snyder...Catonsville Family History of Charles Lee Snyder The following is an account of my family history. But first, let me introduce myself and my family. My name is Charles Lee Snyder (born Oct. 8, 1954). I am the second oldest of five children. I have three brothers and one sister. Their names (and birth dates) are Paul Delmar Snyder, Jr. (Sept. 8, 1948), Edwin Phillip Snyder (born July 23, 1958), Marcella Ruth Snyder (born July 2, 1965) and Rodney Joseph Snyder (born April 29, 1968). Paul, Jr married Carolyn Leigh (Smith) Burton on Dec. 31, 1973. Carol has two sons from her previous marriage to Robert Burton and one son from her marriage to Paul. Joe married Kimberly (Snyder) on Feb 14, 1988. They are now seperated but have two sons. I married Meghan (Ann Flynn) Flynn on April 27, 1991. My father was Paul Delmar Snyder, Sr. (born July 30, 1922; died May 8, 1970) and was born in either Durbin or Cass, WV. He was the oldest of five children. Paul had one brother Tucker Love Snyder and three sisters: Versie Virginia (Snyder) Shamer, Edith Louise (Snyder) Larkin, and Dorothy Ruth (Snyder) Bolinder. My mother is Inez Mae Kerns (born July 16, 1928) and was born on Peter and Lina Brake's farm in Huttonsville, WV. She had one brother, Robert Charles, and one sister, Ruth Marie. Paul and Inez got married at Union Square Methodist Church in Baltimore, MD on Dec. 7, 1946. Because she was only eighteen at the time, they could not get married in West Virginia. Paul is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Brooklyn Park, MD. Inez lives in Apopka, FL. Inez later married Bernard Charles O'Brien on October 6, 1969. Ancestral line of Paul Delmar Snyder, Sr. Paul Snyder, Sr.'s parents were Ballard Lee Snyder (born Oct. 1, 1882; died June 9, 1954) and Ada Myrtle Fetty (born Sept. 17, 1907 in Cass, WV, or according to records her daughter Versie says were found in someone's family bible, in 1906). They married sometime in 1920 or 1921. Ballard, like my father, was also from the region around Durbin, WV. When Ballard was 26 he worked at a lumber camp, according to the 1910 census, and he may also have worked as a surveyor for a gas company for awhile. Legend has it that he was an expert trailblazer having lived his whole life in the wood. The 1920 census lists his address as near the W. M. Railroad and his occupation as a farmer. He was one of at least nine children (Jane, John J., William R., Warrick "Wirt" P., Mintie F., Ellen, Joseph, Almond, and Ballard). In 1920 Ada, 14, was living with her mother, Mary Ann Burgess. Ballard died of uremia in 1954. Hypertension was a contributory illness. He is buried in the Snyder Cemetery, Valley Head, WV. Ada is living with her daughter, Louise Larkin, in Elkins, WV. Ada Schueler celebrated her 90th birthday September 17, 1997. Ballard Snyder's parents were Addison Snyder (born June 3, 1837; died May 12, 1933) and Anzina Sara Louk (born March 16, 1843; died Aug. 15, 1897). They were married on Dec. 29, 1857 when Addison was age 19 and Anzina was age 15. This suggests that Addison was born in 1838 and Anzina was born in 1842. They were also from Cass or Valley Head, WV. When Addison married Mary F. (Kittle) Channell on March 3, 1898 he gave his birthplace as Webster Co., WV. The problem with this information however is that Webster does not become a county until after 1860. He died while living in Mingo, WV at age 95. My aunt Louise says that both Addison and Anzina are buried in Snyder Cemetery at Valley Head although Addison's death record mentions Dry Ridge. Addison Snyder's parents, as recorded on his marriage record, were Elias Zickefoose and Barbara Snider (born Jan. 6, 1824 in Pendleton Co., VA, now WV; died August 3, 1911). There is also a record of Elias Zickefoose marrying Sarah Semmons on Dec.17, 1825 in Randolph County, VA. My mother, Inez, speculates (based on stories Ballard used to tell) that Addison may have been born to Elias and Barbara out of wedlock and that Barbara's father may have murdered Elias. Alfred D. Anderson married Barbara Snider on Sept. 15, 1840 in Randolph Co., VA (now WV). He apparently took young Addison in because the 1850 census lists an Addison Anderson, 11, as a member of his household. Martha Valentine tells me that Barbara is buried in Alexander Anderson Cemetery located on the home place of Alexander Anderson, on a hill between the Left Fork of Holly River and Jerry's Run, near Wheeler in northern Webster County, WV. On March 3, 1898, about a year after Anzina is believed to have died, Addison Snyder married Mary Channel. He was age 58 and she was age 47. Clara's sister, Virginia Swiger, married Carl Winfred Channel. Virginia has a family history of the Channels and, interestingly, Ballard Snyder is listed in the Channel's family history. Somehow Carl Winfred Channel and Ballard Snyder's step-mother, Mary Channel, must be related. Anzina Louk's parents were John Louk, Jr. (born 1815; died 1874) and Frances "Fanny" Helmick (born July 5, 1818; died April 5, 1888). They were married in Randolph County, VA on August 9, 1836. Please find attached some background information on Anzina's line back to my gggg-grandparents William Louk (born 1750) and Margaret Liter from Botecourt VA, ( or possibly Botetourt County, VA). I have no information on Elias Zickefoose's parents at this time. Barbara Snyder's parents were Frederick Snyder I and Mary Simmons. I wonder if Mary Simmons is the sister of Sarah Semmons. This would make Frederick and Elias brothers-in-law. This question remains---did Elias get Barbara pregnant and did Frederick kill Elias as a result? Please find attached Frederick's line back to to John Snyder I (1720-1760) and his wife Mary (maiden name unknown) in Culpeper County, VA. Ada Fetty's parents were Tom Fetty and Mary Ann Conn (born May 4, 1883; died Dec. 2, 1938 as Mary Ann Woolwine). I have yet to find out Tom's birthplace and birthday. Sometime around 1920, while Ada was still a young teen, a jealous girlfriend shot Tom in the leg. Ada says he bled to death on the floor of their house. Her niece, Pauline, disagrees saying he lived sometime after that incident. Pauline's husband, Bill Knavenshu, says that whoever shot Tom did blow his leg off. The 1920 Census states Mary Ann was born in Kentucky. She was married several times. Other husbands were a Letty, Dayton Burgess, Eb Lewis, Joe McGlone, and Tucker Woolwine. In fact, according to the 1920 census, her name was Mary A. Burgess and she had two children living with her (Versa Lewis, 15 and Ada Fetty, 14). She may also descend from Cherokee Indian, so my aunt Dorothy tells me. She and her brothers are said to have grown up with Frank and Jesse James, the Younger brothers, et al. Ada's niece, Pauline, claims that one of Mary Ann's brothers was shot and killed. Mary Ann died of cancer of the bladder. The true fate of Tom Fetty has not been determined. I have no information on Tom Fetty's parents at this time. The 1920 Census states that Mary Ann's father was born in Virginia but does not give his name. All of Mary Ann's grandchildren that I have spoken to insist that Mary Ann's maiden name was Conn and that Conn was also the last name of her father. Her death notice, however, gives his name as Jess Count, and says he was born in Kentucky. Her mother's name was Emily Roden, also born in Kentucky. This information was provided by Tucker Woolwine, Mary Ann's husband, at the time of her death. I have no information on the parents of either Jess Conn or Emily Roden at this time . Ancestral line of Inez Mae Kerns Inez Kern's parents were Charles Christopher Kerns (born in Kingwood, Preston County, WV, on Sept. 26, 1907; died 1971 ) and Clara Ellen Swiger (born in Cass, WV, on Jan. 13, 1907; died July 1, 1983). They were married on Dec. 13, 1926. Both Charles and Clara are buried in Brick Church Cemetery, Huttonsville, WV. Charles Kern's parents were John Kearns and Inez Castle (born around 1868). According to the 1910 census Charles' mother, Inez Kearns, age 42, was a widow, unemployed, with four children (Mildren, 16; James, 11; Paul, 5; and Charles, 3) living with her in Grafton, Taylor County, WV. She had born ten children, only five of which were living in 1910. Her oldest child, Mary Ann, may have been married by this time. My mother says that John was killed in a coal-mine explosion. I have read that 537 people were killed in coal-mine disasters throughout West Virginia in 1907. I am looking into whether John was listed as one of those killed. I have found a Pat J. Kearns, 35, who was killed in the Monongah coal mine explosion which took the lives of 361 people in 1907. Shortly after the 1910 census was taken Inez placed Charles in an orphanage. By the time they took the 1920 census, however, Charles was working as a servant for Peter and Lina Brake. My mother says that Charles later went to work for the C & A Gas Company where he worked most of his life. Mary's daughter, Freda Kaufman, also granddaddy Charles' niece, is living in New Lexington, Ohio. She may have some useful information but I have yet to hear from her. I have found no information on the parents of John Kearns or Inez Castle. My mother thinks they may have lived in Pennsylvania and that John and Inez moved from Pennsylvania to West Virginia. Clara Swiger's parents were John Henry Swiger (born Jan. 22, 1881; died Dec. 20, 1968) and Nettie Burdetta LeMasters (born Nov. 20, 1884; died May 3, 1978). They were married in 1901. The 1910 census lists three children living with them (Roy, 6; Clara, 4; and Goldie, age NR). Also living with John and Nettie were James Bailey, 41, and Troy Bailey, 6. The census also indicates that John worked at a sawmill in 1910. Both John and Nettie Swiger are buried in Brick Church Cemetery in Huttonsville, WV. John Swiger's parents were Elias Jacob Swiger, Jr. (born around March 1838) and Mary (Robinson) Robinson (born around 1841). They were married on April 29, 1880. This was the second marriage for both of them. Elias, Jr. was previously married to Susannah Talkington on April 17, 1864. Mary was previously married to Thorton Robinson on October 16, 1864. Please find attached the Swiger's family tree back to John William Swiger (born around 1730; died at sea in 1780's) and his wife Mary, maiden name unknown, (born around 1749). Both were born in Bavaria, State of the Federal Republic of (West) Germany. Much of that information was found in a book by Dr. Michael Barrett. When Michael created it he was interning and living with his parents. That address is 829 South Arundel Drive, White Hall Annex, Florence, SC 29501. The book is two volumes ($52.00) and is called The History of the Swigers and Related Families in Doddridge and Harrison Counties, WVA. Arden and Ethel Swiger are in the process of adding John Henry Swiger and hope he and his family will be included in the next edition. Mary Robinson's parents were John Robinson and Susannah Shaver. Nettie LeMasters's parents were Isaiah LeMasters and Elizabeth Clouston. Elizabeth may have been part Indian, according to my mother. Uncle Arden tells me there is a book on the LeMasters but that he hasn't had a chance to look at it yet. Isaiah LeMaster's parents were Anthony LeMasters and his wife, Angaline (maiden name unknown). Elizabeth Clouston's parents were Thomas Clouston (may be spelled Clougston) and his wife, Rebecca (maiden name unknown). . The address is: http://www.familynk.com/users/louk449. Angella Bloom's great grandmother, Eva Mae Louk, (Anzina's neice...Andrew's daughter) had very thick jet black hair up until the day she died. Never turned grey. She stood about 4'10" tall. There seems to be a few common threads among the Louk's, such as red hair, freckles, pale skin, twins, and a very uncontrollable temper that has gotten quite a few in trouble. Some have been put in jail, while others were considered insane. In the 1800's some were even institutionalized. Their temper has been described as "a rush of blood to the head, with headaches for no apparent reason". Basically, they didn't think rationally when they were angered and they would do things that got them into a lot of trouble. On the other hand Eva was the most quiet, meek, sweetest person you would ever hope to meet. Her sons and their children have definitely been affected. Anzina's mother, Fanny, and at least 2 of Anzina's brothers were considered insane, and one brother, George was institutionalized for 17 years. George committed suicide at 75 years old, 3 years after the courts found him competent to take care of his own affairs. Anzina's younger brother, Paul, was a witness to the murder of a Louk (not sure who) and was set to testify, but the day before the trial, he was found dead, hanging from a tree, on the Louk family farm on Elliott's Ridge in Elkins (where I believe all the Louk children of John & Frances were raised). To this very day, no one knows if Paul committed suicide or if some family members who wanted him out of the way murdered him. Some think he was murdered because he was found hanging by the tree with his knees bent and his feet dragging on the ground. Some say that Paul Louk's ghost has haunted Elliott's Ridge from that day to now. There are some newspaper articles of that tragic event. Angella Bloom found most of this out from an interview she had with some of the elders in the area. I.
