James and Rose Whalen and Family

This is a Website in honor of my family, The Whalen Family. I want to start with a little bit about dear Nan and Pop and continue up to the third and fourth generations. Hope you enjoy this half as much as I did putting it together. So sit back, turn up the volume and enjoy!

Rose Cole and James Whalen, married Februaray 23, 1925.
Best Man, Stepehn Cole, and Maid of Honor, Gert Cole.

James Whalen was born on 11/11/1894, in Concepion Bay, Newfoundland, Canada. His parents, James and Agnes Burke, had 6 children. When Pop got to Philadelphia, he stayed with the Gushue Family in Port Richmond, and there he stayed, never returning to Newfoundland. Pop was a carpenter by trade, and helped with MANY projects that had to do with family. You could always count on Pop to lend a helping hand!

Rose Cole was born on August 3, 1903, in Concepion Bay, Newfoundland, Canada. Her parents, Alice and James Cole, had seven children. Rose came to the United States with her father, James, on the ship, S.S.Silvia, departed from Newfoundland, Canada, on August 26, 1922. Upon arriving in Philadelphia, they both stayed with John Cole, Rose's brother, at 3034 Miller Street. Rose told stories of the hard life that she left in Newfoundland and never returned.

Although Nan and Pop had six children, I was not able to get in touch with Uncle Jim's family at this time. So hopefully after this years Christmas Party, our 24th I believe, I may be able to get some dates on our six Whalen cousins, Janet, Mary Jane, Jimmy, Linda, Rose and Patrick.

At last head count, the Whalen Family stood at 118 strong (sorry in-laws, you were not counted THIS time) and we are still growing! We are truly blessed to have such a wonderful, fun-loving and forever growing family....something that Nan and Pop would be extremely proud of....because FAMILY was so very important to them!

Some people who should have special mention, besides Nan and Pop, are those family members who are no longer with us...Aunt Roseann, who passed away 1/24/90, Uncle Joe, who passed 1/2/92, my Dad or Uncle Chal to many, who passed away 1/3/97, and Uncle Jim, who passed away 1/28/2002. Just like Nan and Pop....they are gone, but will never be forgotten!
