1. THE BEST   WOMEN’S REFUGE

PROGRAM SPECIFICATIONS

 

Preamble

 

The Best Women’s Refuge (BWR) is a project of The Best  Community Centre (BCC).   The refuge is located in purpose built premises and has five bedrooms, four bathrooms. communal living, dining, laundry facilities and secure play areas.  It is located within the St. George area, close to public transport and schools and has wheelchair access to and within the refuge house.

 

Please Note:

The term domestic and family violence is used to be inclusive of Indigenous views and experiences. Indigenous communities have indicated a preference for the term family violence as it more accurately reflects their experiences which  may include family feuding (Blagg, 1999), and which may apply to family members beyond partners.

 

A Memorandum of Understanding between the Commonwealth of Australia and the States & Territories in Relation to SAAP 2000-2005 is developing new service delivery models to address  four principles in to ensure optimum responses to client needs.  These are:

 

1. Provision of a safety net for disadvantaged people

2. Focus on client need and satisfaction

3. Collaboration with other service systems

4. Outcomes focused

 

Funding Source: Department of Community services through the Supported Assisted Accommodation Program (SAAP)

 

Target group:

 

1.      Women & their children  escaping Domestic/Family Violence, who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. This includes women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander women and women with a disability or chronic health condition or who have children with a disability, learning difficulty or chronic health issues

 

2.      This includes accompanying children and young people (both genders) up to the age of 18 years providing they are in educational institution

 

Please Note:  Homelessness is generally defined as the lack of a safe, secure, affordable place to live.
