WHITEHAVEN JUNIOR SQUASH CLUB
The junior section of Whitehaven Squash Club was established in the late 1980’s and has been thriving ever since. The club is affiliated to Squash England.
Current Roll of Honour
Although the philosophy of the club is to welcome junior players of all ages and abilities, the club’s successes should not be underestimated. It has consistently produced high quality players who have moved on to both county and national recognition as follows:
- One player with a national ranking
- 2 current county junior champions
- 6 players who are regular members of county teams
- 2 players who are nominated members of the Northern Region Centre of Excellence
Junior Coaching
The focal point for all junior development is our weekly coaching session. It takes place at Whitehaven Sports Centre each Saturday morning. The club has two Squash England qualified Level 2 coaches, and two Level 1 coaches, who share responsibility for the session. The coaching sessions are supported by ‘senior’ junior players. The cost of each junior session is £1 per player.
The Saturday morning session is split as follows:
9.45 – 10.45 Session 1 Beginners and Improvers
This session is open to all beginners and improvers, although those new to the club should make contact before coming along (see below). Although the sessions are a mixture of fitness training, skills practice and fun/games, progress is measured through the use of the recently introduced Mini-Squash awards scheme.
10.45 – 12.00 Session 2 Advanced Players
Although the fun element is maintained, more serious attention is given in this session to improving technique and match practice. Players move into this group, from the beginners/improvers group, on the basis of coach recommendation. Currently progress is measured by the Unsquashable awards scheme, although this will change later this year.
Junior Teams
Each year Cumbria Squash organises a county-wide team competition played on selected Sundays throughout the second half of the season. 5 Whitehaven junior teams are entered in this year’s competition at age groups Under 11/13/15/17 as well as an under 13’s girls team.
Junior Courts 15.30 – 16.45 each weekday evening
To encourage junior members to play squash, outside weekly coaching sessions, the club has a special arrangement with the management of Whitehaven Sports Centre. This means that a junior court is reserved, each weekday evening, exclusively for junior use. It can be hired at the low rate of 50p per player. If they are available, other courts can be used at the same rate at the same times. Although the can be pre-booked, players can simply turn up to access these courts.
How to Join
The club operates a completely non-discriminatory policy regarding new members. Basically everyone is welcome, whatever their age, colour, sex or ability. The most important factor is that junior players enjoy the Saturday coaching sessions. To access these sessions, simply contact the junior organiser or one of the junior coaches as identified on the club’s home page.
