"Carnivale is Australia's most significant multicultural event, presenting a cultural cornucopia of theatre, music, dance, film, visual art & performance that challenges the commonly held notion that Australian multiculturalism begins & ends at our bellies.
Carnivale is a snapshot of Australia in 2003.
Australia's stories told in languages other than English, danced to instruments once considered exotic & performed by artists whose cultural differences are far fewer than their similarities."
JORGE MENIDIS, Artistic Director/CEO
Carnivale's two primary activities are the staging of an annual ARTS FESTIVAL throughout NSW in September & October, & CAFE CARNIVALE, an eclectic program of live musical performances performed weekly at venues around Sydney.

MESSAGE FROM THE PREMIER

Carnivale has come a long way over its 26 years. Today's Carnivale is pivotal to the development, promotion & presentation of multicultural art & artists of migrant backgrounds.
State Government funding for the organisation is greater than ever before. New corporate sponsors such as Resi Mortgage Corporation are also contributing to the festival's growth & quality.
The recent appointment of Jorge Menidis as Artistic Director, & a new management team, will further consolidate Carnivale's standing as Australia's premier contemporary multicultural arts festival.
This year's program is packed with quality arts entertainment. Audiences will enjoy performances from some of our best home-grown artists of migrant backgrounds.
The program offers entertainment to audiences across Sydney. Join us in September & October for the best multicultural music, theatre, dance, visual arts & literature our State has to offer.

Premier

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

We have over 200 countries represented in Australia. Almost 40% of our population comprises migrants & their children, almost half our population. In other words, our multicultural society is not marginal, it is very much the mainstream & is culturally diverse.
Within this diversity, we celebrate our comman humanity based on mutual acceptance, respect, knowledge & understanding. This is what drives Carnivale.
Indeed, Carnivale is a unique opportunity for the people of NSW to experience this wonderfully rich diversity through theatre, music, dance, film & other 'happenings' in a range of venues from the Opera House to our suburban streets.
I thank the staff who have worked tirelessly & to our sponsors who have shown great faith & shared vision in helping to bring this festival to you.
I invite you to come & experience this cornucopia of events which will stimulate the senses. Enjoy!

Welcome to Café Carnivale!

The idea for Café Carnivale came from the concept to establish ‘Sydney’s World Music Centre’, a centre for global music and a support infrastructure where musicians could be promoted and profiled to the people of NSW.
The project was conceived from the feedback of many musicians and other artists requiring spaces, or venues, where they would gain employment, express themselves, perform, exchange, explore and develop new audiences. From the audience’s perspective, these artists would provide a vibrant local arts scene, which was affordable, informal and, importantly, welcomed children.
That was the spirit of Café Carnivale and, since opening early in 2001, the Café has moved from strength to strength, welcoming capacity audiences on a weekly basis, producing an innovative program of world music artists and securing a place for itself in the Sydney live music scene. During the Carnivale Festival 2001, the Café is reaching even further by programming a month of concerts held in the Courtyard of the Parramatta Riverside Theatres, whilst profiling more World Music bands at the Eastside Arts centre.
Needless to say, without the support of Carnivale, the NSW Ministry for the Arts, Eastside Arts, Parramatta Riverside Theatres and the Australian Arts Trust none of this would have been possible, and I would like to thank them for their support and encouragement.
I am glad that Café Carnivale has become the meeting place for Sydney’s global music lovers and is fulfilling its promise to our musicians by developing a musical culture, a culture of diversity, of quality, and of innovative, experimental and challenging work.
Thank you.

SOUND OF MISSING OBJECTS

Presented by Performance Space & Carnivale

A collaborative installation by Panos Couros, Jonathan Jones & Ilaria Vianni
Based on archival research, SOUND OF MISSING OBJECTS explores tensions between representations of Aboriginality produced in international 19th Century exhibitions & the making of an Australian colonial identity. Hundreds of Indigenous objects were removed from their cultural home – collected, exhibited & traded around the world. It evokes the discourses, sounds, voices & texts that gathered around these objects in their journey from maker to collector, to exhibition hall & finally to the museum.
