The idea for Café Carnivale came from the concept to establish ‘Sydney’s World Music Centre’, a centre for global music and a support infrastructure where musicians could be promoted and profiled to the people of NSW.
The project was conceived from the feedback of many musicians and other artists requiring spaces, or venues, where they would gain employment, express themselves, perform, exchange, explore and develop new audiences. From the audience’s perspective, these artists would provide a vibrant local arts scene, which was affordable, informal and, importantly, welcomed children.
That was the spirit of Café Carnivale and, since opening early in 2001, the Café has moved from strength to strength, welcoming capacity audiences on a weekly basis, producing an innovative program of world music artists and securing a place for itself in the Sydney live music scene. During the Carnivale Festival 2001, the Café is reaching even further by programming a month of concerts held in the Courtyard of the Parramatta Riverside Theatres, whilst profiling more World Music bands at the Eastside Arts centre.
Needless to say, without the support of Carnivale, the NSW Ministry for the Arts, Eastside Arts, Parramatta Riverside Theatres and the Australian Arts Trust none of this would have been possible, and I would like to thank them for their support and encouragement.
I am glad that Café Carnivale has become the meeting place for Sydney’s global music lovers and is fulfilling its promise to our musicians by developing a musical culture, a culture of diversity, of quality, and of innovative, experimental and challenging work.
Thank you.

SOUND OF MISSING OBJECTS
Presented by Performance Space & Carnivale
A collaborative installation by Panos Couros, Jonathan Jones & Ilaria Vianni
Based on archival research, SOUND OF MISSING OBJECTS explores tensions between representations of Aboriginality produced in international 19th Century exhibitions & the making of an Australian colonial identity. Hundreds of Indigenous objects were removed from their cultural home – collected, exhibited & traded around the world. It evokes the discourses, sounds, voices & texts that gathered around these objects in their journey from maker to collector, to exhibition hall & finally to the museum.
