Negeri
Sembilan, literary means ' nine states'.It was at one time a
federation of nine territories ruled by Malay Chieftiens who
were known as 'undangs'. The state is often identified with
inluence of Minangkabau migrants from Sumatra as reflected not
only in the state's architectural heritage but also in its
matrilineal social system and performing arts.
This
southern neighbour of Selangor encompasses an area of 6,645
sq.km. flanked by rugged mountains in the east and a long,
lovely stretch coastline in the west. the state is characterised
by vast stretches of greenery, rolling hills and tranquil
country area. The capital of Negeri Sembilan, Seremban is well
connected to Kuala Lumpur by a modern highway and efficient rail
links. The town centre consists of a mix of pre-war shophouses,
colonial buildings and modern commercial centres. Finging the
town are many pleasant residential areas located on hillsides.
Negeri
Sembilan has a population of about 722,000 people (1991
Population Census). Of this 56% are Malays, 29.7% are Chineses,
16.4% are Indians and 1.4% others. Average population density is
109 persons per square km.
