THE DEPARTMENT'S SECRECY
IN MATTERS OF GRAVE IMPORTANCE

I do grow weary of naming criminals disguised as officers when, although it would be relatively simple to solve this never-ending-problem of abuse, there's been little effort on the part of the department to create any large or lasting reform in this area [See Prison Ethics].  James Crosby is apparently so corrupt... or cowardly... that he would rather sit on the holes in his Wall of Silence than to stand up like a man and give his employees the ultimatum, "NO MORE!" That's perhaps why he has the support of little more than a ball team's worth of his own employees.

However, as long as laws and regulations are being broken by criminals in uniform, and Crosby is doing little about it, some of us will continue to name them in an effort to make sure the FDOC cannot claim they do not know that THESE ARE NOT ISOLATED INCIDENTS but ongoing, redundant and repugnant.

I just received the following report of the beating of a thin, sick, paralyzed patient by two 'officers'. At least in this case, the guilty guards have apparently been fired. The kind of people who would beat on a paralyzed individual should be sharing a cell with 'the worst of the worst', but as yet, we have no idea if they were charged or arrested. We'll have to assume they'll stay gone because there is no register for errant guards, although there should be a national list of prior employees who should never work in a position of authority over anyone.

Most of us would feel there's absolutely no defense for such reprehensible behavior, but the ex-guards probably had an excuse ready. Their attack has to arouse curiosity in even the most desensitized or hard-hearted person reading this - There has to be much more to this story than that the 'officers' were suddenly overwhelmed with a desire to beat on a patient.  Yes, I have questions. Why did the patient weigh so little?  Did the offensive officers know him or know of him before his admittance? Does the patient have a story to tell?   Does his family know? How the hell is he doing?  Kay Lee

INMATE BEATING AT UCI - 2 OFFICERS FIRED
Monday, April 18, 2005

I just received reliable information from UCI that a hospitalized inmate was beaten by 2 correctional officers. The officers were terminated the week of April 4th over the incident. I don't yet have the inmate's name and number, but I do have the names of the 2 FDOC staffers fired:

Sgt. Griffith and CO1 Vining

Sgt. Griffith is one of those officers that make inmates cringe when he passes by them. He has a kick ass attitude and probably let his temper get the better of him.

The incident occurred at the UCI hospital. My source observed these two officers beating on a 60 pound paralyzed inmate patient. I haven't gotten any information on his condition prior to or since the incident.'

UCI officials are trying to keep this incident and the terminations quiet. The reason for this is obvious with the upcoming Commission Hearing in Tampa this week. Jean is going down and I am providing her with the letter I received so she will have it available for the Commission and those of you interested.

The information was provided by a man I have known for 25 years and I can completely rely upon the facts and accuracy of his statements about this incident.

Anyone who has any information regarding this incident please contact me. If you have sources whereby you can confirm or verify this information and acquire the inmate's name, DC # and condition, I would appreciate it.

Secretary Crosby;

I received information relating that within the past couple of weeks a paralyzed inmate hospital patient weighing less than 100 pounds, was beaten severely by 2 staff members; a Sgt. Griffith and CO I Vining. I have been told that both officers were terminated by administration for their actions during the week of April 8th.

I write to you asking if you are aware of the incident and if so for your comment concerning the beating and terminations as well as request the name and condition of the inmate involved.

Respectfully I remain,
Robert Sloan

This is urgent, if you have any additional information on this or any other crime committed by employees of the department of 'corrections', that you please contact me, Kay Lee at kaylee1@charter.net. Without your help, we cannot notify families or present enough evidence to get to the truth of these incidences.
