Banner is one of the important parts when constructing a website. The meaning of the banner and how it relates to the reading is very important, especially the topic of the theme. In Photoshop and ImageReady, these software allow end users to create the theme using the line, typeface, colour and shape etc. It is the easiest way to show how the theme was created and understand what the message is trying to convey to the reader.

The theme engagement ceremony in virtual was chosen for this analysis as this is a very interesting topic for the web banner. Engagement is a very formal ceremony in our life. When people think about an engagement ceremony in virtual, its impossibility in reality becomes the selling point and hence attracts the reader・s attention to visit relative websites because readers want to know what it is going on and satisfy their curiosity. Living in the new era with high transparency of information, people are interested in exploring in things not always happened or things have never happened. They will invest their time to go through the website to find out more.

The theme relates to the reading 4. In the reading 4 (Turkle, 1996), it describes a 23 years old physics graduate student called Stewart. He doesn・t have many friends. His only friend is his roommate so he is so lonely and bored in his physical reality. Stewart nearly spends most of the time into the MUD because he thought he could create a better version of himself. He created a character called Achilles to represent him and a living environment he always wantsto have in his reality. When he played with this, he met a woman called Winterlight. This character was played by one of the three female players on that MUD. After a dinner date they had a formal engagement ceremony on the MUD. The banner relates to the theme because Stewart created a character on the MUD to engage with another character. In this banner, the pig represented the character to be engaged with another character. Also the computer represented Winterlight. It doesn・t matter to show how the character looks like. The banner is showing the same way as Stewart did as well. Both of those cases were going to display something happened in virtual.

The process of the theme was created by PhotoShop, ImageReady and Illustrator. It had four objects to complete this theme. Those objects are:

Basically, the pig was drawn in PhotoShop and it had 3 layers. The colour of the pig used the gradient to create the effect that the character looks more active and interesting. The computer was drawn in PhotoShop as well. It only took two layers to and it was drawn by few shapes and lines. The shape of the heart was created by the Illustrator. The colour of it was picked from the :Drop shadow; tools in PhotoShop. However the theme displays lots of heart and just only three of those were using the :Draw Shadow; tool. The purpose was to make these three hearts outstand the others. Those drawing tasks used :Pen Tool; to create. Finally the last object was the text, it only used one layer and was created in PhotoShop. Due to the topic was to create a cyber or virtual atmosphere, the typeface was downloaded from the web. The typeface is called :LotsOfDotz; (Jakob, 1998). It is purposely chosen to give people the same feeling as the topic.

Make a web banner in ImageReady, one should put all the objects in PhotoShop first from the drawing software. Therefore after those four objects have been created then put those objects into PhotoShop even one of the objects was made in Illustrator. In the PhotoShop, the layout must be created first before making the animation because it will be the final display on the websites. Those objects were then imported to the ImageReady and it also enables some animation work to be done. For the banner in ImageReady, the pig appears slowly on the banner. After that the computer, hearts and finally the text are display one by one.

The timeframe for the whole process from creation of the banner to completion took about two weeks as there were some difficulties. The first one and half weeks were mainly focus on the drawing part and played with the software to understand how to make a good effect for each individual object. Most of the time was spent on drawing the two characters. After the drawing, the layout and animation were done in the following days. This assignment wasn・t very difficult to complete. To make a professional banner, the first thing to do is brainstorming and the most effective way to tackle this take is to research from the internet because one can get the idea of what people wants (Peter, 1998). In this banner, it took quite long time to play with the PhotoShop and the ImageReady and finally to get some ideas to know how to make a good object.

Skill or knowledge learned form the assignment. The process of this assignment was focus on the PhotoShop and ImageReady. The skill that one learnt was to make animation for the object in ImageReady and get more experience to use these two software. It is a very useful leaning experience for people who don・t know much in ImageReady or in PhotoShop.

Evidently, banners always appear at the top of the website. That part of the websites is very easy to attract people attention. This banner・s idea and design are relating to the Reading 4. Both of the characters, namely the pig and the computer depict an engagement ceremony in unreality. The pig and the computer in the theme represent the characters of Achilles and Winterlight respectively from Reading 4. This banner is using the same way to display on the web as the characters of Achilles and Winterlight.
