Once upon a time in a SOHO Theatre I morphed through the positions of
stage manager, production manager, artist therapist, lighting designer,
prop master and "reluctant a/c repairwoman" all while tucked neatly under
my trusty Yankees ball cap. During my tenure I helped stage
approximately 700 one person shows. I got to hear all about drug, sex,
food, shopping, and toe nail polish addictions. I heard about: the
40 years olds still living with their parents; the "I'm going to be a
better person because my grandfather took me fishing story"; the look how
crazy my father was show; the I've got 7 personality's and let me show
them to you; and my favorite "I am the messiah in a salad bowl" show.
I saw some really bad theatre, some good theatre and even a few great
theatre pieces. I saw some good actors who just wanted to entertain
and some who just wanted fame. One might think this would cause burnout
but it only caused slight dementia. I kept a journal and maniacally made
fun of the "ranting monkey's". So, in tribute to my early days in a small
SOHO theatre I decided to keep the name. I loved working in downtown
theatre and all it's eccentricities- there are some very creative and
funny people out there-and I hope to bring that feeling along with me in
Monkey Rant Productions.
