History of Hobart United F.C
Part 1 - " Established in 2003 " / Part 2 - " Success in 2004 "

Hobart United emerged from the Tasmanian African community, who dreamed of forming their own team to compete in the State's soccer league. It was late 2002 when Jacky Taban decided to form a soccer club. Jacky's initial vision was for a Young African Youth Club, which would cater for the sporting needs and aspirations of young African-Australians.

Awak and Jacky

From this original concept, Jacky drew together a group of inspired soccer players, who were eager to play the sport they loved. Amongst them were several leading figures , Patrick Ochaya, Fawas Ateem, and Awak Mario-Ring. During this time a healthy debate had emerged over the name and direction of the club. Patrick felt that the aim should be to embrace Multiculturalism, in order to strengthen the ties between Africa and Australia. His proposal to call the club Hobart United was successful, and the team was registered under that name. Patrick was to become the Club's first president.

Following this monumental beginning, the club gained a major sponsor, the Migrant Resource Center. Through its help, and other kind donations, the club was able to buy its first strip, which has now become a symbol of Hobart United. The classy green and white uniform along with black, is now immortalized in the club's crest. Hobart United's first season in 2003 saw the arrival of a new leading figure. The club approached Brazilian born Romilton Amaral to fill a demanding coaching position.

United's Second President Romilton Amaral

Romilton took reigns of the club at a crucial time, as the club experienced a turbulent season in 2003, which saw the accumulation of several red cards and suspensions. Despite the poor disciplinary record, the team grew stronger under Romilton's coaching and leadership. A new soccer style was forged, and the team began producing results coming runner's up in the 2004 Summer Cup. Romilton was the team's inspiration, by scoring 22 goals and playing in true Brazilian fashion with skill and artistic flair.
