Prologue

The room was big and comfortable, and the bed took up only a small portion of the richly dressed room. She sighed sleepily and shifted slightly before turning around fully and facing him. He was watching her, his eyes travelling across her face. He lifted a hand and stroked her cheek, gently. “G’morning,”

She made a sleepy sound and closed her eyes again. “What time is it?”

“Nearly nine.”

She shot up. “What? Nine? How come we slept in? Is Kaci okay? Oh, God, she’s not sick or anything, is she? No, she’s not, ‘cos you’re just lying here! What if she’s sick and we’re just lying here and, and why are you laughing?”

Oz chuckled and stroked her cheek softly. “She’s with Xander, remember?”

She felt her heartbeat return to normal slowly and lay back down into her husband’s arms. “Oz?”

“Yeah, baby?”

“Why is Kaci with Xander?”

“He wanted to spend a little time with his goddaughter. They went to the carnival.”

“Did he take the bottles? And the changing bag? What about her blankie in case she gets scared? What if she gets scared? What if there are clowns there and she starts to cry and wants one of us and, oh God, what if there are clowns there? Xander hates clowns! One time, at his 5th birthday party there was this clown, and Xander got really scared ‘cause he thought the clown was a wizard because he had all these hankies that came out of nowhere and Xander went up to him and told him to stop stealing the napkins and then the clown said-”

She was cut off by her husband’s warm lips. He pulled back and smiled sheepishly. “You were babbling,” he said apologetically.

“Oh. Sorry. You’re supposed to stop me when I do that.”

“I just did.”

“Oh. Yeah. Oz?”

“Mmm?”

“Do it again,” she instructed.

He complied willingly, and kissed her softly. She smiled against his lips and wrapped her arms around his neck. “I love sleeping in,” she told him in between kisses.

“I love you,” he said.

“I love you, too.”

Willow gasped and sat up quickly. She was breathing heavily. Kennedy rolled over to face her. “What’s up?” she asked, half-asleep.

“N-Nothing,” she said. “Go back to sleep.”

Kennedy didn’t need telling twice. Within seconds she was fast asleep again. Willow eased herself out of the bed and shrugged on her bathrobe. She knew she wouldn’t be getting back to sleep.
