'The Monument Valley Tribal Park is around 30,000
acres in area. Deposits of siltstone, sandstone,
and shale lay buried there for many millions of
years. After the lifting processes that occurred
throughout the Colorado Plateau, erosion by wind
and rain left the Permian sandstone pinnacles and
buttes standing above the red shale. The reddish
colours are due to the presence of iron oxide and
the black streaks to manganese oxide. Many of
formations are over 250 million years old.
