VENICE BEACH is close to Fisherman's Village forms a vital part of the local Venice community. Originally Venice was, like its Italian namesake, built on a canal system in the early twentieth century. Many of the canals have since been filled in following sewage problems that arose due to the local tides. The beach and boardwalk (for cyclists and skaters) are poplar venues for Los Angeles residents during weekends.
