Chris and Dustin's Mega-Movie-Mania: A college life take on movies
Chris and Dustin's College Perspective on Movies
Hey guys, this is Dustin and I's thoughts on movies that have come out to rent recently. Pretty soon I will have reviews on films currently playing, but for now this is what I have, and I am adding more reviews as we speak. Remember these are college guy reviews purely on entertainment, not on which one I think will win an oscar. Just entertainment.
Spun
B-
Crime/Gangster and Comedy
Have you ever been curious about doing meth or speed, but just don't have the guts to actually do it? There is a safer alternative...watching this film! It is the story of a young speed freak who is introduced by his dealer to the "creator" of his favorite drug, which then leads to a three day drugged out adventure involving everything from the police to a green dog. Crazy camera work and excellent acting will introduce the viewer to the feelings and the life of a meth addict. Consider this film the closest you will ever come to a speed trip. With all of the cameratrickery it is extremely mesmerizing, you won't want to look away.
MPAA Rating: R For Persuasive Drug Content, Strong Sexuality and Violence (all the good wholesome values we all need to see).
Daredevil
A-
Science Fiction/Fantasy and Action/Adventure and Thriller
I've never been one to like those superhero, comic book, fantasy, type of films, but this movie is unlike any other. The visual effects, and the audio in this movie were unbelievable. The acting was superior and fight sequences were the best since the Matrix. It takes place in Hell's Kitchen, a part of lower Manhatten, New York. A young boy, after an accident at a BoiChemical plant, was blinded for life, yet his other 4 senses worked at a superhuman level. His other senses put of a strange sort of mental radar that compistated for his lack of vision. When Matt Murdock's (Affleck) father was murdered, he then devoted himself to help those who no one else would. Calling himself Daredevil, he became a Lawyer by day, and an over zealous vigilante by night. This movie has some of the biggest named stars in hollywood right now, including Collin Farrell, who's performance was different than any role he has ever played, but one of his best. I had to go out and buy this movie the day I rented it, not only cause the movie was awesome, but because Jennifer Garner is hot!! Highly Recommended.
MPAA Rating: PG-13 For Violence (more than you would think) and some Senuality and for people kicking the BaJebus out of a Handicap Man.
The Real Cancun
D
Reality...Yeah, Just like the evil monkey in my closet
They must be talking about a different Cancun, cause when I went I had to pay for all my shit on my own! Unless you're a trust fund baby, you know that you can't stay in a mansion, have an endless supply of spending money, and get to be famous for getting plastered all week. Most of us, stay in crappy hotels, and use all of our $300 dollars in spending money on booze, cover charges, and the occasional alley-girl. MTV isn't reality it's reality on crack. Oh, sorry, I almost forgot...the plot. Well, so did they. If you want to watch a good reality program, The Home and Garden Network is all you need. If you can become famous for videotaping you and you're friends drunk and naked, than I could be the next Steven Spielberg. NOT Recomended.
MPAA Rating: R For Strong Sexuality/Nudity, Language, and Partying (including some real light weight sissies that need some drinking pointers)
The Transporter
B+
Drama. Crime/Gangster Thriller and Action/Adventure
When this film was realeased in late 2002, It had to have been the best Martial Arts film of the year! This is an amazing peice of art with a plot that is trying to catch up. As former Us Special Forces soldier turned expatriate whos job is soley to "transport" what ever he is told, he is hired to Kidnap and transport the honry daughter of a lethal chinese cook who is intern smuggling a group of his fellow countrymen into France as slaves. This film is non-stop action that will leave your ass hurting from it being on the edge of your seat so long. The transporter is actually a spitting image of my fiance's father, which is kinda scary to imagine him as a killer...gulp! Highly recomended.
MPAA Rating: PG-13 For Bad Ass Violent Sequences, and Some Language.
The Life Of David Gale
A
Crime Drama/Thriller
This is an amazing film full of twists that will keep your heart pounding up until the last second. Texas has always highlighted the news when the different views of the death penality arise. This movie takes a closer look at this through the eyes of David Gale, those close to him as well as those he never even knew. David Gale (Spacey) is a college philosophy professor who was convicted of raping and murdering one of his collegues and closest friends. They worked together outside of teaching in DeathWatch, a organization apposing capital punishment and working for a moratorium in Texas. In the final days of Gales life, he requests a reporter (Winslet), from New York, to interview him and get "his story" straight. She soon realizes that she got more than she bargained for when taking this assignment. With a man's life in her hands, she races to put together the peices that make up the final moments of the victims life, but will she be to late to save his?? One of the best movies that we have seen in a long time. This film hits home with many of the views that we debate today. You will NOT be dissapointed with this rental!! Highly recomended.
MPAA Rating: R For Violent Images, Nudity, Language and Sexuality (some panty ripping/bondage/pity sex)
Shanghi Knights
C+
Action/Adventure and...Comedy...(Kind Of??)
We waited two weeks to rent this movie, because it was always checked out...No clue why, because after viewing it I had to run to the bathroom and pop a Zanex so that I wouldn't hang myself over those two hours of my life that I will never get back!! If this movie had a plot I guess you could interpret it as this: John Wayne (Chan, of all people) is saddened because his father, the keeper of the imperial seal, has been murdered. He travels to New York to meet up with his old "partner" Roy O'Bannon (Wilson). The two then make their way to London to avenge his fathers death and recover the seal...uhhh, thats it. In the process they stumble across a plot to murder the royal family. With the help of Wayne's sister, can the trio prevent the murder of the royal family, recover the seal, and avenge the death of Wayne's father? Well, let me give you a hint...Yes, they can. Take our word for it, no need to rent the movie. Have you seen a Jackie Chan Movie before? How did that one end? Oh, ya the same way this one did! I don't see how this movie can be classified as a comedy, when the only time that I laughed was when I missunderstood Chan with his "Fluent" English and thought that he had made a Dick joke, when in reality he was talking about lunch meat!? Not Recomended.
MPAA Rating: PG-13 For fake kung-foo violence, and a waste of my time amount of sexual content.
Final Destination 2
B
Thriller and Suspense/Horror
This is Oviously a sequal, about a bunch of kids trying to defeat death!? One teenager forsees a car accident that was going to kill her and a bunch of other people. So what does she do...? Saves their lives. So now we got death all angry and one by one each of the survivors starts to die (sound anything like the first one?). Now, its a race of life to see if they can beat death in its own game! Its actually a pretty cool movie, I thought. Very unexpected...very gory. Although I might add, I have never seen a movie with more creative ways to die than this one, Very entertaining.
MPAA Rating: R for extremely gruesome and horrific violence, Some weed smoking, a few F bombs, and a pair of old lady boobs!
Basic
A-
Drama, Crime and Thriller
This movie is awesome!! Its about a group of Amry Rangers who mysteryously dissapear while out on a training excersize with their legendary drill instructor (Jackson). Two of the Rangers are recovered, one with life threatening wounds, and Agent Hardy (Travolta) of the DEA is brought in to investigate. It is an unwinding tale of who-done-it, and unmatching stories, and even some of their closest friends can't be trusted. Like there was this one part where this one dude was all like, "Hey, bring it bro!" and then pulled his '9' on another dude. And that guy was all like, "Hey screw you pal!!" and then he pulled out his gat! Then this other dude, like out of nowhere, was all li...no, no, no, its to hard to explain and probably better watched! Make sure you are FOCUSED while watching this film (Beer and Basic do not mix). I thought it was actually kind of hard to follow. But, It is an endless aray of twists and turns that just don't stop. Extremely entertaining and highly recomended. You won't be dissapointed.
MPAA Rating: R For graphic war violence and the Osbourn Family style Cussing.
About Schmidt
D+
Drama
...ZZZZZZZZZZZ...oh sorry, I was just thinking about this movie. Boring!! It's About this guy named Schmidt (hence the name) who has nothing left to do with himself since he retired and when his wife suddenly dies he decides to pack up and travel accross Nebraska (at least they could have used a state that has something to look at while you wake up in the middle of it not understanding what's going on)to see his daughter get married to a waterbed salesman. Well one mistake after another, the only friend he seems to have is a Tanzanian boy he sponsors for 73 cents a day, who he writes extensivly long letters to complaining about his life and the choices he's made. It sucks!! It's one of those movies that wins academy awards for camerawork, and cinematography, and all that crap that makes you think the movie is good, so you go see it and then you leave the theatre depressed, bored, confused, and out $6.50. I do not recommend this movie at all.
MPAA Rating: R For some language, some nasty brief (thank God) nudity, and a stupid plot.
Old School
A
Comedy, Pure Comedy!
You can't ever beat a movie with Will Farrell in it, you know its going to be good! It's the story of three guys in their late 20's who, after bad relationships, want to relive their college life by moving into a house near their old campus. They stumble across the idea of making an unofficial fraternity, where anyone can be a member, including a 92 year old man. This is a fraternity where people can enjoy the party side of it and not have to abide by the school's fraternity standards. Well, thanks to a jerk of a Dean, that's all about to change. This is a hilarious non-stop pant-wetter, that will leave your stomach hurting! It has a great cast, and an unforgetable...everything! It really makes me angry though, that all the real movie critics, you know the 50 year old men with their dry sense of humor that are looking fo the next oscar winning picture, they all give this movie a D?! No, this movie will never win an oscar, but it's damn funny! Highly recomended.
MPAA Rating: R For sexual content, brief nudity (including many views of Will Farrell's ass), and some language.
Phonebooth
B
Drama and Suspense/Thriller
Collin Farrell delivers a very intense role as this movie takes place in, and is centered around a phone booth. Let me repeat this again because I dont think you took in what I just said, The WHOLE movie takes place in a 4" by 6" foot Phone Booth. It's a pretty good flick though. A man is being watched by a rooftop killer with a sniper rifle, and his life depends on a phone to save his life or he will face the consequences of his life's actions...and maybe even death!? Pretty suspensfull, edge of your seat thriller with a great cast. Highly recomended. Extremely short though, not even an Hour and a half long.
MPAA Rating: R For a lot of unnecesary cussing, and a dissapointing amount of violence.
Gangs Of New York
C-
Drama and Crime/Gangsta'
One word can be used to descibe this movie...LONG! Yet, another example of a dissapointing Oscar winning picture. This film is set in the five points region of lower Manhatten. A young kid named Amsterdam (DiCaprio) seeks vengence on the man who killed his father, come to find out, his father was killed as a result of gang warfare. Through the mess of dealing with crooked cops, corrupt politicians, and a few brothels here and there, his task is more difficult than he could ever imagine. Excellent scenery, costumes, and film play, but poor script and dialogue makes this movie...eh, alright. Poor casting when it come to Cameron Diaz, she needs to stick to "Charlie's Angels," where at least there she can...still suck at acting! a very slow plot leads to this three hour movie which is not recomended.
MPAA Rating: R For Strong Violence, Sexuality, Pointless amount of extensive nudity, and some 4th grade type cussing.
