How Can I Help?

"ReTree International is a nonprofit organization that has three objectives: To plant trees on idle lands wherever they will grow throughout the world; to involve people, especially young people, in this effort, and at the same time, educate them regarding the importance of trees and forests to the well being of the planet and ourselves; and to support forestry research."
“Forests make oxygen and help us stay alive. The animals live in the trees too. Forests make life to make everything beautiful. We also need the trees for lumber and our economy.” - Fourth grade student at Dry Creek Elementary School during tree planting for Earth Day, April 22, 2010.

ReTree Looking For New Members
Working as a volunteer doesn’t come with a paycheck but if you value our trees and forests and recognize their vital role in keeping our planet healthy, and you understand the importance of teaching the next generation of forest stewards these values, then being a part of an organization like ReTree can be a very rewarding experience. The amount of time needed depends on how much time you want to contribute to this effort and how much time your schedule allows. Contact us by e-mail (above) with your interest. We look forward to hearing from those of you that want to help us plant trees.
Trees For Joplin
On May 22, a devastating tornado tore through Joplin, Missouri. A large section of town was destroyed. Along with the destruction and the casualties, thousands of trees were broken off, uprooted, or stripped bare of their bark. What were once leafy neighborhoods with stately oaks, elms, hickories, and other hardwoods are now barren. Many groups are coming together to try to help Joplin replant. ReTree has contacted some of these groups and will be involved in trying to raise funds and find sources for seedlings, when replanting can begin this winter or next spring. The Southwest Missouri Resource Conservation & Development office has established a "Trees for Joplin Fund." It's working with the Community Foundation of the Ozarks to accept donations.

Fort Campbell
In December, 1985, an Army transport plane crashed in Gander, Newfoundland, killing 256 soldiers. In the wake of the tragedy a 15-year old Ontario girl, Janice Nikkel, wanted to do something as a memorial for the soldiers lost. She contacted the Toronto Star and said she wanted to start a fund to plant trees as a living memorial for those lost. The story was picked up by the press and newspapers and widely circulated. Frank Lockyear heard the story on the radio in Oregon and contacted Janice to offer his services in trying to organize the plant. He coordinated with the 101st Airborne Division based in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and they planted 256 donated Canadian sugar maples. Recently Ms. Nikkel visited Fort Campbell to see how those trees were doing. See her story here.

"When we plant trees, we plant the seeds of peace and seeds of hope. We also secure the future for our children. I call on those around the world to celebrate by planting a tree wherever you are."
