Toyota began the project of designing a mid-engine
sports car in 1979. It debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show as the (SV-3). In 1984 the vehicle
was launched into the Japanese market as the MR2, for mid-engine Runabout 2-seater. The
exterior styling was cleaned up from the SV-3 concept car, resulting in the shape known as
the Mark I to MR2 enthusiasts.1985 was the year of release into the U.S. Market
with 1989 as the final year of the MKI
styling.
