estrogen and testosterone.
In liver
cells, the smooth ER uses enzymes to break down
potentially harmful chemicals.
In muscle
cells the sarcoplasmic reticulum, a variation of
the smooth ER, controls the release of
calcium ions that cause muscle contractions.
