Reversing the Roles
of
Our Father
"Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee."
Exodus 20:12

The other day I sat down and wrote this poem about my father and how I feel about being in a Caregiver type situation and as I was writing it I felt such a need to express how it must be with other fathers out there, ones who are loved just as much as my own and may be living out the rest of their special moments with a child or loved one. I know that having our father live with my husband
and I has been one of the greatest gifts any child could ever have, even if I am over the 1/2 century mark already. It
doesn't matter, fathers are fathers, and mothers are mothers, and without them our lives would never be the same.
As I wrote this I was also thought about my sisters, Diana & Evey Sue, and my brother, Ron, because I know they feel the way
I do about loving and caring for our parents. Our mother is no longer here with us and it has been hard on our father,
but because he knows how much he is loved and is not looked at as a burden he can go on to live another 10 or more
years. I would gladly celebrate a 100th birthday for him.
Being a caregiver for a parent is not always so easy, but it is rewarding and keeps the warmth within my heart to
know all I have to do is look across the room and see my father sitting there. I am Blessed in every way possible and I
know my sisters and brother would do the same if they had the opportunity to do so.
We are all Blessed to have a father like ours.
Our father's are a Blessing
Sometimes it seems disguised,
Especially when they seem so frail
As they grow old before our eyes.
We're blessed to see their weakened smiles
As we listen to the tales they tell,
And when we say "I love you dad"
It's amazing how their spirits sail.
Our father's who have slowed way down
Who cannot carry their own weight,
Will shed the tears you'll never see
It's something in their heart they hate.
For years they've carried us through life
From our birth to our growing up,
And now they look to us for care
Their giving has now been enough.
We love them more than we ever have
As we try to take care of their needs,
And even though our roles are reversed
Our caring for them is a Blessing indeed.

The photograph used in the top was taken of my father, Claude R. Spivey, down in the Burnt River Canyon
area of Baker Co., Oregon. He and I had gone on a fishing trip that day. He is 90 years old in this photograph.
