WHERE IS THAT WALL?
Is there really a wall that separates

CHURCH

and STATE?

The first amendment to the Constitution of the
United States of America reads as follows:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government
for a redress of grievances."

The Founding Fathers wanted to make sure that America was not under the jurisdiction of a “national” church such as the Anglican Church in England. There were a group of Baptists who feared a national church, so Thomas Jefferson wrote them a letter to explain that the Founders took care of that by creating a “wall” of separation of church and state. That wall is meant to keep government from proclaiming a national church. To put it another way, there was not to be any single denomination federally established.

Thomas Jefferson attended a church service in a very public building in Washington D. C. just two days after he wrote that letter to the Danbury Baptists. That service was held in the Chamber of the House of Representatives in the U.S Capitol Building! Regular church services were held there till after the Civil War, so it’s reasonable to say that Mr. Jefferson did not want there to be an absolute separation of religion from government.

In order to keep civility and virtue in government, there has to be a moral foundation, and the morals that the Founders chose were those based on their religious beliefs. “George Washington called religion and morality ‘indispensable supports’ of ‘political prosperity.’ ” (Taken from an email from Dr. Frank Wright of the D. James Kennedy Center.) The men shaping our government believed in God and His written Word, and this country is blessed because of their wisdom.

"Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
The people He has chosen as His own Inheritance."
Psalm 33:12

America is the land of the “free.” We enjoy freedom of religion, but our foundation was built on the teachings of the Bible. Our government was formed around the morals of Holy God. Freedom comes from God and that freedom allows us to live as we please, under the law of the land, and choose whom we worship. God does NOT demand our worship, He desires it and blesses those who choose Him.

We must keep our freedom “secure” by keeping God in government. John Adams said, “It is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand.” To separate the church from the state leaves the door open to the morals and principles of anyone and everyone. Taking God out invites the devil in!

Hanging the Ten Commandments in our public schools might just help keep evil out. Maybe, just maybe, kids will read them and make the decision to try to live by them. No second sign that reads “Please Read” is necessary because we have the freedom to choose. Gouverneur Morris was the author of the Constitution of the United States. He said, “Religion is the only solid basis of good morals; therefore education should teach the precepts of religion, and the duties of man toward God.” Wonder what would happen if our schools actually did that.

"Train up a child in the way he should go,
And when he is old he will not depart from it."
Proverbs 22:6

"To those who cite the First Amendment as reason for excluding God from more and more of our institutions everyday; I say: The First Amendment of the constitution was not written to protect the people of this country from religious values; it was written to protect religious values from government tyranny."
Ronald Reagan
