Rabbit News & Reviews

This page is still under construction.

Wolf Hollow is home to a rabbitry that raises Standard Rex and French Angora rabbits. I originally got into rabbits because I spin, weave, knit and crochet, and because I wanted to raise meat for the table. Thus the angora for the fiber and the Rex for the meat and pelts. But I discovered the joys of showing rabbits and have since gotten deeply into the show scene. I love getting my bunnies ready for a show and competing against other breeders. It's a blast! I still spin my angora wool and I am planning some very nice blends with my Shetland fleeces and some Angora goat fleeces I am getting.

Breeding and showing rabbits is really exciting for me. I am fascinated by the color genetics of rabbits. I have been studying everything I can find on it. It is really very easy, as genetics go. Right now I am developing several varieties of Rex. I have black, black otter and broken black as well as blue otter. The blue otter is not yet an ARBA recognized variety so I can't show my blue otters. But I have a couple of really nice animals that I am going to work with. I am also trying to find out who has the certificate of development for the blue otter Rex so I can find out if I can help with the development. Until I can do so I am crossing my blue otter with my blacks and black otters. According to the color genetics of rabbits all my first generation of babies will be black and black otter. If I were to breed those babies back to a blue otter I would start getting the blue otters in my litters.

I am also working on red Rex. Reds are pretty rare here in California. I think I have the only reds in So Cal. I know a breeder of reds in Central Cal. and I think there are a couple breeders in N. Cal. I have a buck and a doe and I'm trying to get my first litter of reds. Type and fur are not great but I'm hoping to cross the babies with my best blue otter buck and breed those babies back to my best reds. As you can see, color genetics in rabbits is pretty interesting. At least, it is to me.

In French Angora I am working on improving my body type. I have some very promising juniors right now. They have beautiful junior wool and their type is pretty good. Go to my Show page to find out how they are doing.

My French colors are mostly white and blue. I am now starting to get some blacks. And I have a very nice blue tort buckling that is very promising. Also I got a Smoke Pearl and a Pearl from a blue to chinchilla breeding. These two babies are very nice and I have high hopes for them.
