Amber Nobility
There are 28 noble houses in Amber. Here are brief notes on eight of them.
- Bayle
Distinguished only by the fact that they are the Royal Vintners to Amber, producing a variety of elegant reds and some truly pedestrian whites. Lord Bayle adores dogs, raises and shows many, and decorates his bottles with their pictures. Vinta, his eldest daughter, once had an affair of some years with Caine, and is
known to have associated with Merlin.
- Chantris
Lord Chantris was also at Patternfall and witness to the Unicorn's choice. His house, while generally acting as warriors for the realm, are known to provide notable sorcerers as well, and will occasionally provide gossip to the court by this son or that going off to join a theater troop.
- Feldane
The current Lord Feldane distinguished himself at Patternfall, and was present at the Unicorn’s choosing Random heir to the throne. He is still important in Amber’s navy. His house is connected to many of the merchant holdings in Amber. His least son, Lasraig, is currently serving in the royal courts in some minor position. The house Feldane is known for extraordinary service and loyalty to the throne.
- Illyria
Lady Illyria (who resolutely takes no Lord, although she rotates candidates through her chambers with fair frequency) is a prominent force in Amber. Members of her house have held many positions at court and abroad, and she is known to have been an associate of Oberon's. She owns or controls interest in most of the godowns dockside, and therefore has considerable knowledge of the exact state of affairs of Amber in trade and military.
- Kaltyne
Lord Kaltyne frequents Amber but rarely stays, preferring to act for the crown a broad. The house, however, is large and nearly democratic; Kaltyne and many of his predecessors left offspring practically everywhere. A fair number of Amberites can claim at least a bit of Kaltyne blood.
- N'gochi
A bit more exotic than most, darker complected, and marrying almost exclusively outside Amber, house N'gochi is perhaps a bit disreputable. Think of gentrified Romany, and you ve got the idea. N'gochi is the only house that doesn't pay at least lip service to the Unicorn Church, Amber's state religion.
- Rheinholdt
Lord Rein is the most prominent Rheinholdt currently in Amber. The Rheinholdt clan is largely undistinguished except for their habit of being close with this prince or that; Corwin is the most recent, but not the only.
- Sheffield
There has never been more stalwart, stuffy, stiff-necked support for the throne than from house Sheffield. Each generation the house sends several more Sheffields up the ranks of Amber's navy, officers all, all running to stunted imaginati on, bandy legs, and bristling mustaches. If there is a Sheffield in any room, you will hear his voice first and loudest through the crowd.
