The 1999 Nurses Ball

I couldn't let the Nurse's Ball go by without giving a quick review of my own. If judging by standards of previous years, I wouldn't give 1999's ball a very high rating either for performances or surprises. It came in with a BANG and went out with a BANG, but the middle was a little weak. However, as always, there were some unforgettable moments.

Now, on to the very best part of the 1999 Nurses Ball. The clothes! My "fashion" review gives it an A+! We don't always get a chance to check out the Port Charles cast, but, I'd have to say, both the GH and the PC guys looked great, and all ladies had some gorgeous gowns. I shocked myself with how much I adored Chloe's outfit. It was different and strange, but absolutely beautiful! It looked especially stunning when she danced with Jax. V. was a close second for, "WOW!" Hannah dress, which I recognized from the Emmys, was very tasteful and elegant. As always, Alexis was stunning in simple black, and I always love Monica's style at this event. The one disappointment was the "tacky" choices for Lucy's dresses. I don't mean to criticize but, with all the attention that her multiple outfits get, you would think that one of them could be as nice as the rest of the ladies clothes. Not that she could really look bad in anything!

The best performance, without a doubt, was the opening number by the Quartermaine men. I mean, let's face it, anything that puts Edward Q. in a bright blue shirt and shades is entertainment! When you mix that with Allen's "throw-back to disco" moves and Ned and A.J. trying to push each other off stage, you've got classic Nurses Ball memories in the making. I predict many flashbacks of this peculiar family moment for years to come.

Every year at the Nurses Ball there is some big surprise. This year, however, we seemed to get several little surprises that didn't flow or add up to a whole lot. I suppose we were to be surprised at A.J.'s promotion to ELQ CEO (count the abbreviations in that sentence), but I wasn't. Bobbie and Jerry's tape was a shock to the residence of P.C., but certainly not to any of us. In fact, while on that subject, I have to say that I found that to be in very poor taste. How can GH use the Nurses Ball to stress the importance of AIDS research and education, and then have a sex video like that thrown in as part of a comic relief gag? They should at least have had Bobbie and Jerry taking it seriously. It dampened the impact of those real life video and cheapened the whole event.

The best surprise of the night was actually after the ball was over. I loved seeing Juan confront Sonny in the kitchen! An intense new storyline was born right at that moment. Not only was it born, but it seems the writers are already running with it, rather than their usual "sit on it for 6 months." To me, that was the most exciting part of the evening. Well, that and watching V. get trapped in the elevator with Simon. Those two stole the "show" for me.

So, another Nurses Ball has come and gone and, as much as I love this event and will look forward to it again next year, I hope that they can find a way to recapture the heart and magic that it began with.
