The Philosophy of Science

The question we should ask of any belief is not whether it is wrong, but if it was how would we know?

When we realize this, we become doubtful and begin requiring reasons for allowing ourselves to assume a concept is so. Even then, it is a tentative assumption on the basis that it is the most reasonable at the time.

The Scientific Method is a product of this philosophy. It is a systematic process of both reasonable assumption and action. We start with a concept. Initially, simply reasoning with respect to information already available may be enough to allow a dismissal of a concept.

If, on the other hand, the information available is not enough to reasonably support or dismiss a concept, (assuming we are still interested enough in the concept) information must then be gathered through either simple observation or experimentation. Experimentation itself can become systematic and rigorous. But again, this is all out of being reasonable.
