Orgy's Bobby Hewitt

What was your first drum kit?
All I remember was that it was a swirly red, black and white '60s-looking set. That was the first "real" drum set. Before that, my dad bought me one of those tiny plastic one that broke like the next day.

What's your current set?
I use Tama, Roland V-drums, Paiste cymbals amd Ahead sticks. The V-drums are really amazing. I beat the shit out of them and they last forever.

How would you describe your style?
For every song we tried to make it completely different. Although the sounds may not sound acoustic or "real," we wanted to have the feel. There may be a couple of loops but everything was played by me; it doesn't sound like one guy pushing a button.

How do you achieve that style?
I use some of the sounds from the V-drums, but a lot of sounds we built ourselves. On the next record, we plan to go into the studio for a couple weeks and just do drums--live sounds, sampling, investigating whatever we think might be cool.

Who are your influences?
My biggest influence was Motely Crue's Tommy Lee, his image along with his playing. John Bonham was a really solid, flowing, amazing drummer. Abe Cunningham from the Deftones is a great drummer, too.

What advice would you give a beginning drummer?
Learn as much as you can and never give up. I almost gave up and then Orgy came along. That showed me that if you work hard, it'll pay off one way or another. If you truly want to do it, be ready to go through some hell!

Roland's V-drums

Synth drums--at first, you laughed. But now, thanks to Roland and players like Orgy's Bobby Hewitt, you're probably curious about V-drums' infinite sounds, sensitive pads and sleek look. Synth drums--seriously.
