ORGY's Jay Gordon Takes a Victory Lap

When you started out, did you imagine the band concept could become so successful?
I was definitely curious to see what would happen. I didn't know we'd do as well as we did.

A lot of bands had been trying to reintroduce '80s influences throughout the '90s, but you were the first to have commercial success with it.
Everyone has their influences, but you just have to do it, you know? I think it was just a matter of timing. People were in the mood for change. The acceptance was pretty wide, which I totally appreciate.

You won the Best Video category--do you think it's possible to separate the image from the music, or do you just look at the band as one big art project?
I think it's all part of it. Image is everything, you know. Obey your thirst. But it's definitely more a way of life, than it is just "a rock band." But the visual aspect is everything. I don't want people portraying me as a longshoreman when I'm a rock musician.

As one of the readers' brightest musical hopes for 2000, what can fans expect from the next album?
We're working with [co-producer] Josh Abraham again, and we already have a lot of it recorded. It's extreme in a lot of ways. It's a little more furious at times; it's a little more sedate at times; it's just more extreme in every direction. I think the sound's more mature and that it's progressed a lot, it's grown up a little bit. But in ways it's gotten more snotty and fun. I don't think people want to hear us change too much. And there's no need--there's such a vast world that we've already established musically, that there are still a lot of avenues to explore. We're going to give people some fun new thing to throw into their tape deck and be overwhelmed by, I hope.

In a lighter category, you are the person that the majority of the readers would like to see nude.
Believe me, you wouldn't want to see me naked. Tell them we all have little dicks.

So you feel it's sexier to leave more to the imagination?
    I believe in that.

So no Playgirl spread in the near future...
No. You won't be seeing me go "out on a limp" so to speak.
