I will keep thee from the hour of temptation. Rev 3:10.

........"I also will keep you (out) from the hour of temptation"..........

1. EK number 1537 in Strongs has meanings of out of, from, by,and away from. In over 800 uses in the NT THE ONLY TIME "EK" is translated "THROUGH" is in Gal 3:8 "through faith" as the author or efficent cause (by, of, or through in the sense of Matt 1:18). (EK + the genitive)

2. The Genitive case is the SPECIFYING case, expressed in English by the possessive or the objective with "of". The Ablative case (which we have in Rev 3:10) is the WHENCE case {origin or seperation}, expressed in English by "off","out", "from", "away", etc.

3. The word means "out of" from within, not like APO or PARA ( AT Roberson "A Grammar of the Greek New Testament" pg 596). APO and PARA bear meanings of from or away from (being outside).

4. Some have seized this idea of MOTION OUT FROM WITHIN and mistakenly postulated that it does not denote the idea of a stationary position outside it's object. Those who hold such a veiw emphasize that EK meant "out from within" and APO just "outside and seperate". If APO were used in Rev 3:10 it would mean that keep "outside and seperate" from the hour of tribulation, whereas EK would mean to keep "out from within" (indicating movement from being in the hour at some point). The majority of the time this holds true but there are many exceptions to the "rule".

In Acts 12:7 "....and his chains fell off from his hands " would be the chains inside of his hands.

There are many other examples (Acts 16:33 Paul and Barnabus being washed from inside the stripes is my favorite) so I was just reacting to the mindset of those who insist that the idea of motion from a position inside to the outside is ALWAYS present.

5. John 17:15 is an excellant passage to look at because both uses of EK are found "...not....take them out of the world" (negative + airo ek) airo a verb of motion demands that action is from within to outside because they were in fact in the world.

BUT, (ek tereo.... keep out or protect from....is not a verb of motion) and the condition of the disciples in Jn 17:15b as NOT being in the evil one should be understood as preservation in an outside position (they were not in the evil one and they would continue be kept outside the evil one).

6. The Greek text that the KJV uses in John 17:15 says " ouk erwtw ina arhv autouv ek tou kosmou all ina thrhshv autouv ek( from) tou (THE) ponhrou (evil one or thing or deed)". "THE EVIL" is specific whether it is "the evil one", "the evil deed", or the "evil in the world". Were the disciples at that time INSIDE the evil in world? There is a vast difference between being in the evil world and being in world evil.

7. In like manner (tereso ek tes horas tou peirasmou...I will keep you from THE HOUR of testing.....indicates that they were not in the hour of testing and they would be kept out from it. There is no idea of deliverance from within it or preservation while in it. The normal word for "through" is DIA and for "in" there is EN, EIS, EPI and KATA, therefore had John wanted to convey the idea you suggest he would have used one of them.

8. I chose Jn 17:15 because both ideas were present in the two clauses. In this message I gave Acts 16:33 which will NOT allow the idea of from what one is in (ie., Paul and Barnabas being washed out from in the stripes). I am not saying that the idea of motion from within to the outside is not present. As a matter of record I said it was the primary usage. THE HOUR of testing was not yet upon them (..which shall come..Rev 3:10), and to postulate that because EK is used rather than APO it must mean they were in THE HOUR is wrong. The context forbids the moving FROM INSIDE THE HOUR to OUTSIDE as the hour had not yet arrived.

9. Had John used APO rather than EK would have removed all doubt for those who hold such a wooden view but................

Matthew 6:13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.13 ...alla (but) rusai (deliver) hmav(us) apo(from) tou(the) ponhrou (evil)....

Which is it, were the disciples IN the evil in the world or OUTSIDE and seperate from the evil in the world?
