Panic Attacks

A panic attack is a brief period of anxiety that comes on for no reason at all.

Panic Attacks are a result of the body's fight or flight response.

Panic attacks can be unnerving as usually being unconnected to any stimulus, they are therefore easy to misinterpret as a physical problem.

There are many ways in which you can help yourself to cope with panic attacks and hopefully eradicate them altogether.

Firstly it is important to identify that you are having a panic attack.

When you are able to recognize that you are having a panic attack and that your body is having a NORMAL stress reaction it is easy to break the negative spiral that one can get into through fear and stress responses.

The symptoms of a panic attack are at least FOUR of the following:

1. Abdominal discomfort or abdominal distress

2. Chest pain or discomfort

3. Choking feeling

4. Dizziness and/ or feeling feint and light headed

5. Fear of dying

6. Fear of going crazy or losing control

7. Feelings of being detached from reality

8. Hot flushes or chills

9. Nausea

10. Numbness and tingling in the hands and/ or feet

11. Racing heart or palpitations

12. Shortness of breath

13. Sweating

14. Trembling and/ or shaking

It is also common for a person having a panic attack to think they are having a heart attack and that they are going to die.

Panic attacks can be triggered by many things and some people have panic attacks as a response to certain places or situations, e.g. exams, crowded spaces or going to the supermarket or may even be a response to a phobia.
