11. THOMAS6 FLOOK (JOHN5, JACOB4, JACOB3, JACOB2, FLOOK1) was born 31 Jan, 1830 in St George, Bristol, England, and died 28 Apr, 1900 in Cardiff, Wales. He married (1) HANNAH COGGINS 2 Jan, 1854 in St Phillip/Jacob, Bristol. He married (2) ESTHER CREASE 10 Jun, 1874 in St Phillip, St Jacobs, Bristol1, daughter of ARTHUR CREASE and HESTER MASH/MARSH
Notes for THOMAS FLOOK:
Thomas Flook was a publican at one stage, of the "BULL INN' in Great George Street, Bristol, which is in the St Pauls area.
Unfortunately, he died in St David's Hospital, Cardiff in 1900 from the effects of alcohol.
Thomas was the oldest surviving son of John FLOOK and Hannah PONTING. He was born in 1830 in St George, Bristol and married a local girl Hannah COGGINS in 1854. Hannah was two years older than Thomas and was a cotton maker. One son, George, was born to them at Bell Hill near St Geoges in 1859. At the time of George's birth, Thomas was a sugar refinery labourer. Hannah died whhen her son was only young.
The pub was taken on from 1871-1874 and it is during this time, as a widower he met a young 16yr old girl called Esther Crease. She was only two years older than his son George at the time, and Thomas was 27yrs older than his wife. You could imagine that George wouldn't have been too happy, not that I know what he thought about it.
Anyway, two children were produced from the union, Esther and Thomas. These children took a few years to be born, suggesting perhaps Esther had trouble giving birth or was too young. Baby Esther Rachel was born in 1878 in Water St St Pauls, Bristol. Thomas jnr followed two years later. Esther gave birth at her mother's house in 18 Great George St. In fact it was probably because they lived so close to the pub that they met. Mind you, the death certificate calls him a general labourer.
Not long after the children were born the family moved to Cardiff, where Thomas followed the trade of a bird dealer. He managed to get a house in the centre of the trade district - 6 Trinity St, St Johns. In 1886 Esther died of pneumonia leaving two small children and once again making Thomas a single father. Esther was 8 and Thomas 6 when she died. The family story has it that an aunt stole the Crease family papers and took them to Sth Africa.
Perhaps this aunt initially cared for the children.
Elder brother George took upon himself some responsibility for his siblings. He was only a newly married man having married Rosabella just a few months before Esther died.
George set Thomas up in business a couple of times, but Thomas was a bit too keen on his gambling to make a go of it.
Thomas died 28th April 1900 aged 76.
Known addresses for him are:
1831 Whiteways 1854 Lawrence Hill, 1859 Bell Hill 1861 Moorefields Rd 1871 Great George St 1874 Redcross St 1880 3 Waters St St Pauls 1886 6 Trinity St St Johns Cardiff. Notes for GEORGE THOMAS FLOOK:
George was a commission agent.
The rich side of the FLOOK family was that of George FLOOK. He was the oldest son of Thomas Flook, and his first wife Hannah COGGINS.
George was born on the 27th Nov 1859 at Bell Hill,St George. At that time his father Thomas was a sugar refinery labourer. Two years later in the 1861 census, George's mother was called a "cotton maker". At that time they had moved to Moorefields rd.,
When George was 15 his father remarried to a girl not much older than George himself. It is not known what the young man thought about the relationship nor his step mother.
From 1871-1874 Thomas Flook kept a pub called "The Bull" in Great George Street. George did not appear to take after his father. He seems to have been educated, and had a flair for business since the young man was always quite well off and in control of his affairs.
Thomas Flook, after a few years moved his wife Hester Crease from Bristol to Cardiff. They had had two children: Thomas jnr and Esther jnr. Esther Rachel had been born at 4 Water St Bristol and Thomas at 18 Great George Street. Whether there were other children who died in childbirth ,is uncertain but there was a four year gap from marriage to Esthers birth without a known surviving child. It would appear that by the time he came of age George had left his father's home. On June 21, 1886 , now in Cardiff, he married Rosabella Rosser. He was aged 26 and she 20. He gave his occupation as an agent and his residence as Cathays. His father was called a dealer. By that time Thomas was a bird dealer. Three sons were born to the marriage as well as a daughter. The sons were George jnr, James, (after Rosabella's father) and Fredrick. The daughter was called Marguerite (nicknamed Daisy). No trace of her has been found although a photograph taken by ~her father George is evidence of her existence. She is known to have died at an early age, and her death grieved George very much. On top of which he lost his beloved wife Rosabella.
All of the boys were well educated. George lived in Cathedral Road, Canton,Cardiff He had a great love for photography and he took many photos. On a visit to his house a few years ago, I met Jim's wife. She gave me his photos. which included scenes as well as pictures of the boys.
Georges obsession in photography obviously annoyed his family because his daughter-in-law told me they hated to have their picture taken when they grew up.
Rosabella George's wife had a few miscarriages. She was a pretty lady of Welsh descent. George reportedly broke his heart when she died.
George's life was mixed with tragedy. His youngest son Fredrick, recently discharged from the Naval College, was sent to war in the First World War and was killed. His brother George was the stretcher bearer.
A stained glass window has been erected in St Catherines Church in honour of Frederick, the boy in the big boots.
Since his father was a gambler and drinker, George also tried to look after the upbringing of his younger brother and sister. Esther was 19years younger than George, and Thomas 21years younger. Their mother died early in their lives and George often helped out. Even when Thomas was a grown man George tried to set him up into business , but through Tommy's mismanagemnt and bad luck, coupled with his inheritated trait of gambling, Thomas never attained the business heights of George.
At the time of his death he was living in 191 Cathedral Street, Cardiff.
In his will George left Thomas one thousand pounds and to the two children of his deceased half sister Esther, 250 pounds each. Nice gesture.
He also left his housekeeper Mrs Lizzie Gordon Brown the sum of 200 pounds.
Notes for ROSABELLA ROSSER:
I am not absolutely sure that this photo is of Rosabella as she looks older than a 40yrs old. Maybe Rosabella's mother?
