My Best Friend
Returning from New Zealand with a Jack Russell Terrier is something I am glad I did. He was shipped with me as we flew home from Chirstchurch to Eugene, Oregon. Cholmondeley was only six months old, did not have any fleas, had no rabies shots and had eaten only the best food. Here in the states he got fleas (which we got rid of right away) and had to learn to eat the horrible dry kibble Americans think dogs should eat. In South America we prepared a stew for the dogs every other day. It makes more sense. Anyhow, Chummie is indeed my bestest friend and very entertaining. Even in the bluest funk he can make me laugh.
I grew up in a family that raised dogs and showed them. We had mostly terriers. I raised miniature dachshundts for awhile, until my alpha male slipped a disk in his back and suffered terribly with pain until I had him put down. That was not a fun experience.
Chum was born out in the bush in New Zealand. His mother belonged to a Maori family. Chummie was the runt of 11 Jack Russell terriers. The story is that the father of the woman who owned Chum's mom loved his dog so much he begged his daughter to have her dog to have just one more litter.
When we landed in the USA, veryone said he looked like "Wishbone" on TV.
We treat ourselves homeopathically or with herbs, acupuncture, chiropractry and laying on the hands. This is the way I deal with the infirmities of my dogs. Homeopathics work great and I have several books by English vets.
Yes, New Zealanders are ga-ga about their dogs, particularly terriers. We fit right in.

A good search online will find tons of foxie and Jack sights by breeders and some proud owners like myself. Just be warned that the prices are far too high for a dog, so I don't know who is buying them, but there must be a good business for them. We went to a doxie puppie mill once in Roseberg, Oregon. It was a horrible sight, a shack with the inside walls four rows high in cages with little dogs in them in various stages of breeding. These were not house pets, but breeding machines to make money for the woman who owned them. We did not buy.
