Stewart Cousins
In memory of "Grandpa Fuzzy" 1911-1995
My maternal grandfather was Lawrence Stewart of Arden, North Carolina. (Fondly called "Fuzzy")
As a child we would visit the beautiful hills of the Smokey Mountains to see my grandparents. He played bluegrass
music on the banjo, harmonica and the "jews harp". It was not until I reached adulthood that I realized that the
bluegrass music he played was really the tunes of Scotland and Ireland decendants and that the "Clogging" that my
aunts and uncles did at reunion gatherings was really the Scottish and Irish step-dances.
I can now appreciate that the "hillbilly" background I once surpressed was a thousand years of Celtic History.

I am currently researching my belief that my family of Stewarts came to America to escape
persecution as JACOBITES. I would appreciate any information you may have on the subject.
