A.F.D. Dragon Poetry

          Arangast's Head

"Greetings My Friends! Welcome to my small tribute to the great talent that exists here in the A.F.D. It has been my privilige to be a member of the Alt.Fan.Dragons Newsgroup community since June 03, 1996. In my time here I have heard some of the most touching, talented dragon poetry I have ever come across. I would like to share some of that poetry with you now. For those of you who were here when it was first written, it is something to fondly remember. For those of you who were not fortunate enough to be here when some of these artists shared their work, here's your chance. Bottom line… just enjoy!"

          ODE TO THE DOMINANCE

          Across the land of Dominance
are sights that surely will entrance
the gentle viewer, if they see
the hordes of dragons roaming free.

Above, the skies are bright with wyrms
          performing dazzling twists and turns.
          The ground-based dragons stroll about,
prepared for fun, I have no doubt!

Red, gold, green, purple, even Plaid -
          dragons in ev'ry colour clad.
They're here in ev'ry type and size,
a wondrous sight before thine eyes.
          Solitaire listens to thy woes;
          Gilraen will give thee a rose;
DJ is ready with a quip,
but watch out for that dreaded 'nip!

A raptor runs across the grass,
          legs pumping as he rushes past;
a smaller dragon in his wake
attempts to *splut* him with a cake!

A 'flash', and mirrored scales *bounce* by,
to dazzle our poor viewer's eye.
A sweet smell in the air still hangs -
          'tis chocolate, causing hunger pangs!

A castle, made of pinkest Spam,
          is home to Theri and her clan;
wonderful parties there they hold -
or at least, so I have been told...

And what goes on at Rasha's lair?
It seems a battle rages there.
Look out! That dragon has a gun!
Ah, only water - my, what fun!

          The 'young nuts', there are many here;
          some stay awhile, then disappear.
Others may last, and put down roots,
'til they mature into 'old fruits'.

          Arangast, Zenith, Thyanne too;
          Darkangel, Havoc; all are new.
          The Dominance will welcome all;
'Be Nice' - the One Rule to recall!

The 'Dead Lord', newbie Shadowmancer -
good or bad? I have no answer...
for I am but a 'young nut' too.
          (That's Karrolanth, or maybe Sue!)

So many 'old fruits' have returned
and found this place not what they yearned.
They left again with so much speed,
not knowing they are what we need.

But lovers, too, we also find -
          WalksFar and Lillieth, gentle, kind;
          Nightfire and Velvet, baking cakes;
          Ekena, who for Nightwing waits.

So here it is, the Dominance,
this joyful land where dragons dance.
          Each place I look, a friend I see -
I hope this will stay 'home' for me!

          We Are The Dragon

I glide across your racial memory
Leaving a scent of ether and jasmine
And if you look quickly past your soul
You'll catch me laughing as I wing
          Hard, prismatic colours glisten
Beat in rhythm to your swaying
          Take one last taste, mortal
Try to follow within my wake
And you may just catch the gleam
Of my fierce smile as I look back
          Wingtip encouraging you to embark
Upon the Way of the Dragon
For if I am all that you have made me
So too are you all that I have made you
          And we are the Dragon

          Who Mourns for the Dragons?

          Once there were dragons,
          Their wings touched with gold.
          Once Evil threatened
          But heroes were bold.
          Heroes with courage
          To make Evil fall;
          Along came a Hero
          The greatest of all,
          And conquered the dragons,
          And made them move on;
          Who mourns for the dragons
          They said if you sailed
To the end of the world
          The dragons would be there
          With bright wings unfurled,
          A flash as of lightning,
          A storm in the sun.
          The dragons weren't there
          And another dream's done.
          We trample the Moon.
          We analyze Mars.
          If magic still lives
Then it's fled to the stars.
          With wonders we've seen
          And the ones to occur,
          Who mourns for the dragons
          They say never were?
          We buy ourselves wings.
          We buy shiny toys
          And we worship the things...
          Somewhere past space,
          In an hour beyond time,
          In a forest of dreams,
In a world of the mind,
          Lost past the depths
          Of the last 'wine-dark sea,
          Who mourns for the dragons
          That never will be?

          ~~first flight~~

there is no greater treasure than your first proper flight,
against a background of blue or in the darkest of night.
no greater pleasure than the triumph you will know
as you turn and soar is the moon's dying glow.

listen to zephyros for you know he is right,
you are a child of the air, you were created for flight.
you were made for the light of the morning's new sky,
born for the rush and the breeze's sweet sigh.

your's is the stillness of the pale moonlit space,
the beauty of the dance and the thrill of the chase.
so away! away! across the fading twilight,
to glory forever in the joy of the flight.

you will remember, pause for awhile,
then whisper and calm their fear with a smile:
"the longing to soar cannot give you wings
so lift up your head, put your trust in the winds.."

Aured who enjoys flying above all else

          Above the clouds,
          To soar that height,
          This life is naught else,
          Then enjoyment of flight.

          Inner Dragon

My soul is free, my spirit sings,
I stretch and spread my newfound wings.
          In dragon-form I freely rise
to taste anew the cloudless skies.
No more this world shall trap me here
and pin me down with doubts and fear.
Oh, Mother Goddess, let me be
          dragon forever, soaring free!

Once They All Believed In Dragons

Once they all believed in dragons
When the world was fresh and young,
          We were woven into legends,
Tales were told and songs were sung,
          We were treated with obeisance,
We were honored, we were feared,
Then one day they stopped believing--
          On that day, we disappeared.

Now they say our time is over,
Now they say we've lived our last,
          Now were treated with derision
          Where once we ruled unsurpassed.
We must make them all remember,
In some way we must reveal
          That our spirit lives forever--
We are dragons! We are real!

          Provehito in Altum

A dragon trembles on the edge of darkness
          Shocked talons grip the precipice
          Too soon torn
(too soon, too soon, and why?)
          From the River
          Thrown here
          (Where are you, friend?)
no time to scan the road ahead
no time to learn the way
          none to prepare
(How could we have seen it?)
          Claws slip, clutch rock again
          The chasm echoes
(Dear gods, where are you, friend?)

Memory takes arms against the terror
          Love, laughter shared
          (oh yes, you are beloved)
          Strengthen the dragon spirit
          Free the wings
          Steady the heart
          (within our hearts forever)

          One cry of perfect freedom
          then the leap
          into infinity

          the light of your wings
          will lead us home.....

          The Dragons Are Singing Tonight

Tonight is the night all the dragons
          Awake in their lairs underground,
          To sing in cacophonous chorus
And fill the whole world with their sound.
They sing of the days of their glory,
They sing of their exploits of old,
Of maidens and Knights, and of fiery fights,
          And guarding vast caches gold.

Some of their voices are treble,
And some of their voices are deep,
But all of their voices are thunderous,
And no one can get any sleep.
I lie in my bed and I listen,
          Enchanted and filled with delight,
To songs I can hear only one night a year--
          The dragons are singing tonight.

          I Am Dragon

          I am Dragon
The blood of gods runs in my veins
          My talons are of steel
My wings, one with the wind
          My breath, a withering inferno
My dauntless gaze rules all it surveys
          My visage instills awe

          I am Dragon
My spirit is a thing of fury
          A core of fire
          Unquenchable
          Unconquerable
          Unfailing
          Burning high

          I am Dragon
          Of deadly grace
          Pain born of subverted purpose
          Of a longing unmet
          Of dreams unfulfilled
          Of love withheld
          Of all that is beauty
          Lost

          I am Dragon
          A bestial thing of rage
          The ravening inner beast
          Struggling
          Against the odds
          Against civilization
          Against the world
          Against reality

          I am Dragon
If not in body, then in soul
          Unfearing
          Unflinching
Of love, of rage, of horror, of beauty
          Impossible
          Yet existing
          Immortal essence forever living
          Eternal
          Forever free.

          Claw and heart's fire...

          becuase i dance with fire,
          you have become my flame...
          because you i desire,
          i turn your dragon tame...

          leashed and collared,
          lead me well,
          promise heaven,
          send me hell

          the skys my limit
          where is yours?
          the tiger beside you,
          or sealed tight doors,
that lead to rooms of untold bliss
come and taste my snarling kiss
          darling dear, and mine alone,
          you hold my key,
          i am your throne,
          wield me well,
          your muse, your saint,

          Infestation

Watch the gleaming of the talons,
Hear the intake of the breath,
          As the dragon's rage afire,
Strikes the coming of your death.

Try to steal his hoard, so greedy,
          Such a stupid, dumb mistake,
          As revenge appears so swiftly,
Now your life the beast will take.

See him swooping down upon you,
          Feel his talons digging in,
          As the fire he releases,
          Melting armor to your skin.

Chase him deep into his cavern,
          Follow him into his lair,
          As you barely struggle onward,
Can you kill him? Do you dare?

Once again a knight has fallen,
In his armor laid to rest,
          Just another pesky mortal,
          Killed upon a greedy quest.

          ~~dragon of death~~

          death is a beautiful dragon
with eyes like a white-hot flame,
near the end she lifts her head
and calls us all by name.
death, she sleeps upon a pile
          of useless gems and gold,
each one a memory of heroic deeds
          and a story left untold.
for she claims the greatest warriors
          and the lovely maidens fair
and, in the end, we all retreat
          to death's dark, smokey lair.
young and old she calls us in
          to join her never-ending sleep
for she longs for another companion
          to fill the endless deep.
so, when you hear the calling
          drift across the moor,
          welcome the dark eternities
          and take death's outstretched claw.
then you'll see the black dragon
with eyes like a white-hot flame,
and then she'll raise her beautiful head
and call you by your name.
and the flowers will wither in her presence
and the wind will begin to cry,
they are wondering and they are mourning
for you, the very next light to die.

          Rememberance.....

Listen, young ones, and you shall hear
A tale of a great one, born without fear.
The great one's quest to turn things right.
As he fought the darkness thoughout the night...

This warrior was named at an early age.
          His warrior potential left uncaged.
His wisdom and leadership is now retold
Throughout our land, in heat and cold.
One day when the tides were high
A darkness appeared; the seas gave a sigh.
They knew that this darkness was no good.
And so its guardian did what he should.

He called to the warrior, loud and long.
You must save the waterlands from this dark wrong.
Here, take this sword and use it well.
Its name is Talon; on to vanquish this spawn of hell.

The dragon leader grasped the sword
Its magic glowed bright, and the great one roared.
His talons obsorbed its mighty strength
And off he went, Poseidon in his wake.
Off to the demon, fowl and cruel
The sight of the dragon caused it to drool.
          It dissipated into the tide
It seemed to be gone, but, yet, it lied.

The demon attempted to encircle the Great
To surround it and eat it, like others that he ate.
Yet do not fret ye little hatchlings:
The Talon slashed the demon to ribbings.

Now that you have all now heard,
Let ye mouths hail every word.
          For Talon Starfire reined supreme.
He made it safe for us to dream...

          Ode to the Silent Gold

Ah, me! The quiet serenity of the Silent Gold
which dribbleth not upon the page
          but sits there, quietly
          pondering

What loquasious thoughts have not found us
who sit here staring in confusion
          upon the revelations of
          silence

But, wait! What is this which awaits below
          standing in its grandeur, glowing
          with the calm waves of
          quietude

It is the Silent Gold himself, glistening anew
with the simple good taste not
          to speak, but instead
          remind us

that it is not the word
but the everpresent warmth of soul
that brings us again and again to -- the Silent Gold

          Infinite Skies

          As hatchlings, breaking the shell
We unfurled our damp fragile wings
Flapping and drying them in the sun
Feeling their warmth, and their weight.
Our first flights were terrifying, exhilarating--
We learned that mistakes can bring pain,
But the pain of mistakes was a small price to pay
For the freedom of infinite skies.
As we grow, we think we've learned everything
          About flight, and about the world;
Then one windy day we learn a new trick
That air currents have to teach us.
I've flown alone, and I've flown with friends,
And I've even fought in flight, sad to say.
There is a time for everything under infinite skies--
I'm proud to share this time with you.
