The Croisant Family
William and Margaret (Wunder) Croisant
The Croisant's originated in France, but fled to Edenkoben,Germany in the 1600's due to
religious persecution.
Our Croisant family has a long and rich history in Edenkoben,Germany. Many generations
lived and died there. The first of our line to immigrate to the United States was Wilhelm
(William) Croisant.
William left Edenkoben in 1841 at the age of 22. He sailed from La Havre, France to New
Orleans. From New Orleans he immediately made his way to Illinois where in 1844 he met
and married Anna Margaret Wunder in Hennepin, Putnam County, Illinois.
They journeyed to Hollowayville,Bureau County, Illinois, and bought 40 acres of
property. They started their family in 1847 when George William was born. Their family
grew quickly. Liz-1849, Anna Maria-1851, Phillip Jacob-1853,John Louis-1855,
Katherina-1858, Justina-1862,and John in 1864.
William was one of the founders of the German Evangelical Church in Hollowayville, now called the United Church of Christ.

William became a naturalized citizen in 1848. William and Margaret spent the rest of their
lives in Illinois. William died in 1898 and Margaret in 1909.
John Louis married Katherine Ihrig in Hollowayville in 1877. Katherine was the daughter
of John Adam Ihrig and Anna Maria Lehrer.
John Adam was born in Hesse,Germany in 1832. It is unknown when he immigrated to
this country. Anna Maria Lehrer was born in 1833 in Bavaria,Germany. She came to this
country in 1846 at the age of 13, with her family. Her father was Ludwig Lehrer and her
mother's name was Phillipina Croisant, sisters: Maria Katherina, and Elise and Brother
Ludwig. All were born in Bavaria.
John Adam Ihrig left Illinois by 1880, eventually settling in Washington. Anna Maria died
here in 1881. John Adam remarried (his second wife is unknown). He died in 1914 in
Seattle.
After the birth of John Louis and Katherine (Ihrig) Croisant's first child, Wilhelmina, they
moved to Linn County, Oregon and started J.L. Croisant farms in the Franklin Butte
Precinct. They farmed in tis community for many years.
More children were born to them: Caroline in 1880, Ida ub 1883, George William in 1885,
Maggie in 1888, Sarah in 1890, and Laura in 1893.
J.L. and Katherine moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma in 1915 to join the rest of the Croisant
family. J.L. started Croisant Cotton Company and planted orchards. He lived until 1939
when a heart attack took his life at age 83. Katherine lived to be 84 years old dying in
1942. Both are buried in Muskogee.
